The Bokeh King

Ah- There you are, my friend. What type of lens do you like in this context?Vintage or computerized? ;)

all subjective of course ... but since the background of the 75mm (particularly the hedge area to the right) doesn't seem markedly better than the summarit, I'd say the harsh bokeh is the result of the subject, not the lens. At least it can't be discerned from this subject.
 
I'm getting fonder of Summarits by the day. Curse you, Jaap :) . I've also found a TT&H sample at a not unreasonable price :bang: :bang:
 
Well, I don't like bokeh on either too much, it's a bit better on 75mm lens. Summarit 50/1.5 looks pretty bad to me, but than again - everyone's different.
I like J-3 for 50mm bokeh and J-9 for longer lens (85mm) bokeh. Don't have a 75mm lens, so Can't comment on that.
 
I think Xenon was an English Taylor Hobson design. I am sure the Summarit is a coated Xenon.

My Summarit is not swirly. Noctilux does that.
 
Excellent The prices on the Summarits should begin dropping now.

Horrible lens. It gives me sea-sickness and it distracts me from magnetic North.

I think the only worse bokeh would require a mirror lens. Or my Jupiter 3 with it's swarming angels of doom.

What does that thing do to point sources?

Actually it's based on a Schneider design that Leica had to license, because they got caught with their pants down by the Zeiss Sonnar 1.5/50. Berek was at work on his own highspeed design, but time was of essence.

Basically the Summarit is a coated pre-war Xenon.

The Xenar formula was Schneider's answer to the Zeiss Sonnar design. Leica continued to tinker with the Xenon formula after the war and it evolved into the 1st and then 2nd generation pre-asph Summilux. It appears that the Xenar formula didn't come into its own until the discovery of new glass types and coatings in the late 1950's.

Why did everybody miss the question marks in the title of the OP ;) Kings have been removed by revolutions and replaced by presidents right?
 
My favourite flickr photographer and very good flickr friend, Junku Newcleus, makes magic with the Summarit 50 f1.5. He uses it with Neopan 1600 and it seems that the lens combines very nicely with that very contrasty film.

The bokeh is difficult, and it reminds me of the bokeh I have seen from the Nikkor 50 f1.4. But then most photographers do not use this lens (or the Nikkor) for the bokeh (there is the Noctilux for that).

There is one occasion where I would use the lens for bokeh, and that would be if I wanted to take a photo of a drunken person and I wanted to convey the sense of nausea that visited him after the intoxication.
