Dear Phil,

Well, yes, but how important is it to you? If it's THAT important, why haven't you already done it? Of course a lot depends on your age, such as going to the Island (Isle of Man) for the TT for me. Wonderful romantic idea. So why haven't I done it yet? I'm 60 in June (TT time). At 30 it was a dream. At 60, do I really want to go? My father saw Geoff Duke race there. What could live up to that?

We all have these romantic ideas that turn out, in the real world, to involve more time/money/hassle than we're willing to invest.

Roger, I've ridden bikes all my life, but re. the Isle of Man week - nowadays I'd rather take a ferry that goes a bit further - DUBLIN, and meander around the west coast mountains and bays again!

I was not in a position to post this when I started this thread, but life always has twists and turns that change your values and this is certainly true for me. Within days of my last post here, the most important person in my life, my wife, has suffered terribly for the last 7 months from health problems which I will not detail here. Some of you know already. I just didn't want this thread to end without my finishing what I started.😉

So, my number one bucket list item now is:

Spend as much quality time with my wife as possible with the time we have left in this world, whether it be measured in days or decades.:angel:

Utterly.

In 2000 Frances was diagnosed with breast cancer. Prognosis: 80% survival rate in 5 years. I made the same choice as you. NOTHING is more important.

Ten years on, and counting. As I said to her oncologist, our favourite word in the French language is 'normale'. With all my heart, and with tears in my eyes, I wish you and your wife many, many more happy years together.

Dear Dave

Go hold her hand through the life you have and go together.
Been through the breast cancer situation with two subsequent scares so know how that is, as Roger does.
Have been to one funeral this week and have another to go to on Saturday. And best friend, another RFF member, has just lost her husband. Occasions like these bring you up with a bit of a jolt and you realise just how old you are yourself!
Sometimes the days are short, sometimes there are a short number of days.
But as you say Dave, you can't predict the future. You can plan but maybe the plans don't work out. So take the days as they come - tomorrow is a mystery. I wish you, your wife, and your family many mysterious days to come.

I started the thread before the life-threatening events started. The bucket list was a thought about my getting older while on my second year of unemployment, so it was my way of fighting off depression. Then, well, the ride has been unimaginable.

We are now living one hour at a time (literally) and I limit myself to being away from her to no more than one hour at a time while shopping/running errands/etc. Even at night, I make sure I have my hand touching her arm, leg, back just to transfer some of my own life-energy to her if that is possible. And, yes, at our age, people are always complementary about our holding hands while walking together. Little do they know that we have done that in the past but now it is also because she has difficulty in walking without falling.

All in all, we are thankful and looking forward to the holidays!:angel:

What a strangely moving thread. Gets me thinking about my own "bucket list", that is, to the extent I have one. Thank you for that!

My time is certainly limited due to indisputable health reasons (progressive condition leading to loss of sight and hearing), but when you're young such as me, it's hard to balance out living a "normal" life (not trying to think too much of what lies ahead), yet also experiencing things while it's still physically possible.

I'm sure you are right about the 'life-energy' you mention.
You can nearly measure the energy in a room where everybody is positive and enthusiastic. Conversely before entering a room full of depressed and downcast people you can feel the negative vibes.
My wife had her cancer 23 years ago. It changed her outlook positively and we now don't even have to bother with check-ups. Being with another woman who had been through the same experiences helped her enormously. Positive support like that made all the difference. Any possibility for similar help for you and your wife?
