the cl crapped out today...

bummer!

i had a workshop downtown all day today, so at lunch, i took the cl with 28 for a walk. took some shots, changed a roll of film and soon after the camera died.
the meter stalk is hitting the shutter curtain and needs 'help' back to the return position. the shutter is jammed also unless i do my hit the camera against the workbench trick.

should i send it off to kinderman for repair or just buy that m4-p that's for sale here?
the m4-p was my first leica...sold it a long time ago...

damn.
 
personally, I'd go for the M4-P.. the CL is a great little camera, and the built-in meter is nice.. but it's not quite the same thing

any idea what repairing the CL will run?
 
Hi Joe,

You could always buy the M4-P and repair the CL😉 But funds are always limited :bang: and you seem to like your CL *a lot*. In fact, I don't anyone who likes CL's as much. So, I think, even if you buy the M4-P, you 'll end up repairing the CL (not by your own I hope 😱 ). What's the alternative anyway? Send it to the landfill? No way.

Maybe ask kinderman how much for a meterectomy and use it as a pure manual body? Though I agree that the M4-P is probably the better bet long run.

That's some lousy news about the CL Joe. I noticed that M4-P body too. It looks to be a great deal. I was actually considering it myself as I am starting to think about a second body to go along with my M4. But I don't really have the money right now. And I'm also in the market for a TLR. But I digress...

Anyway, I'm sure that you would enjoy using the M4-P. But it's not really a second body to anything you already have. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't get it. But if you have the $550 now, why not sell the 90 and maybe something else and put all the proceeds towards that black ZI that you have been wanting. Just a thought. (Honestly, I am not trying to ratchet you up here. 🙂 )
 
That does suck. The CL is a great little package. You have quite a move, all your bodies have built in meters and moving to a M4-P brings in the no-meter issue. Not a big deal for some, deal breakers for others. You have a L and a ZI which makes me question the M4-P (it's about the same). WHne I look at the CL, I think pocketable camera. Now you throw on a 28/1.9 and you get questions like, is that a camera in your pocket or are you happy to see me? If size is an issue, get the CL fixed.

Taking size out of the mix, do you want a carry everywhere camera, get a L CV 25/4 combo, but it's not the same quality as the CL. Great choice, but not the same.

A used M6 classic or M5? Now the M5 gets you into the same era, but might be more robust. The M6 classic gets you into more bucks, so why not get another ZI? There is something to having the same body. Perhaps a new ZI SW could fit the bill. Price sounds right in line with fixing CL or new M4P.

My heart says send the CL in for TLC to the best and love her for many years to come. My head says I do not know enough about your shooting style to make a strong recomendation.

the reality is i could easily live with what i have right now.
i don't need another camera unless the second cl dies on me.
i like shooting without a meter, in fact, it's almost like shooting with the zi on ae, i just point, compose, focus and shoot. i have a handheld (glad i kept one now) and use it sparingly with a meterless body.
sending it off to kinderman for a look-see will cost me 40 bucks plus shipping so i imagine i will eventually pack it up and see what's really wrong with it.
the m4-p is tempting because it's there, right now.
 
Yeah, you have to fix the CL. What caused the problem anyway? Seems weird that it would do this all of a sudden. Does it have to do with mounting the 28? (I'm sure that's not it, but thought I'd ask. If the meter flag was down, i.e. shutter wound, when the lens was mounted, I suppose it could have been bumped some.)

it's a very smooth camera, seems well maintained.
the advance stuck, i took off the lens and the meter stalk was just there half way into position and pressing against the shutter curtain.
i moved it back into place and hit the shutter release and it fired. but then after advancing the film again, it repeated the same thing.
 
Hi Joe,

This is what I would do WRT the CL: if the photocell is good and strong, I'd send the CL in for an overhaul and hopefully it will be good for a long time, or even allow you to sell it as a recently serviced item with good photocell (getting rare).

If the photocell is dying, then I'm not sure I'd fix it unless you really had a need for a compact M body with no meter.

fwiw, Sherry Krauter did a wonderful overhaul on my CL, it was around 2 bills, but worth it. Also, she won't charge for examining it and giving an estimate.
