the elmar has landed...

My Elmars from 1994 & 2004 hit the roller cam of my R-D1 & R-D1s bodies, contrary to my 1962 copy. The botton of the "tube" is not the same.

It collapses safely on the R-D1?? That's interesting news! I've beenthinking of upgrading from my 1960s 50/2.8 Elmar...

I have read that it will not collapse safely. I used mine a bit the other day, but I'm not comfortable thinking I might accidentally collapse in putting it into my bag. But the results are really nice.

I guess if you are careful or put something in place to keep it from collapsing...

i gently collapsed the lens into the body and felt no resistance at all.
i then took a few shots and it all still worked ok. i'm not sure that i would do it on a regular basis though as it seems to be popular knowledge that it should not be done and i don't want to tempt fate.

Elmar

Hi, i´m trying to get my elmar back (also my iii-f), i miss it so much!

When i got my rd1s, i had already sold the elmar and couldn´t even test it!

Bye and congrats!

Ha! I just got an elmar, same vintage, but in silver. Very happy with it so far, though i haven't had enough time or weather to use it, yet... I'm sure it'll get plenty of use come spring.

with the lens off the camera, i collapsed it and then mounted it onto the rd1. the tube hits nothing on the way in.
there seems like lots of clearance re. the light baffles also.
no hitting anything when turning the lens to click lock into place.

but most people say that the elmar m does not collapse into an rd1.
i wonder how that was determined?
it's a wonderfully compact set up collapsed.

I have an old 1938 50mm Elmar f/3.5-f/18(collapsible)(LTM)w/inf.lock-(Serial#473xxx)- playing nicely on an R-D1 body, no troubles, i'm glad to hear the more modern versions will play nicely as well. (some day, maybe i'll try one on mine)

thanks for posting.

Because the 'tube' of the lens hits the roller cam when i collapse it, at least with my Elmars 50 from 1994 and 2004 on both my R-D1 and R-D1s bodies. The roller cam is very close to the bottom of the tube actually. Less than one millimeter on a Leica M. Easy to check when opening the back of film Ms. Suffice it to wobble the tube a bit to hit the roller cam with all my Leicas. No problem with my Elmar 50 from 1962 though as the diameter of its tube is smaller at the bottom.

Sorry for the poor pics but you see what i mean i guess.
