I've been working to find a "right" combination of film (Arista EDU 100 Ultra) and various developers. This one is with Rodinal 1:100, 10 minutes at 68 degrees, 1 inversion each minute. Negatives are still a little dense.

Oh, yeah...the camera...I just took delivery of a NEAT Vivitar 35 ES fixed lens job. Terrific l'il machine, very comfortable, easy to use. If anyone has an old carcass of this camera, I need the timer lever and screw...

Nice mid tones, Don. It's hard to tell anything from a computer monitor though. You pretty much have to have prints (are you printing or scanning?) of identical scenes to compare film and developers. If you are scanning negs, you want them to be a bit thin compared to a printing neg. With scanning, (and with contrast grades in printing) one can compensate or create a lot of diferent effects, so I'm not so sure/convinced that it is too difficult to find the right combo of film and developer. Some combos clearly don't work well, eg Rodinol with 400 speed film due to excessive grain, though that is an effect that may be desireable for some applications. For myself, I am looking for an economical combo, and have switched to HC-110. Unlike Rodinol, which is also economical due to high dilution options, HC-110 also works well with 400 speed film. It is also pushable, so it's versatile as well.

That one image looks great. When I was messing with HC-110 and AEU100, I used dilution h at 7.5 minutes which ended up the best I could get out of the stuff. But I didn't get many mid-tones or shadows with my development (and it appears that you have). I have gotten some barely acceptable images with AEU100 by not scanning but printing. Well, to make a long story short I ordered ONE roll of AEU400 (35mm) to try once more. I also ordered ONE roll of AEU100 in 120 because I don't think they are the same film. Please show us some more photos. I'll let you know how I do with the 400, both types. I'll be careful about posting the last time I criticized a film I got my lunch handed to me.

Frank, what 400 are you shooting? I've shot a lot of Tri-X and have times/temp for this film rated at 200 and 400, dilution (H).

I use HP5+ and have been using Ilfosol S, but am switching to HC-110 for reasons of economy.

Frank, I'm scanning. The HC-110 is really rough compared to the Rodinal. It produces harsh images, IMO. Next attempt will prompt a shorter development time, probably 8 minutes. I like the slower film, and am close to getting a mix that will be my "stock". Of course, I'll keep working with other soup ingredients and see what happens...
