The film scan mode in the D850 is awesome!!!

Because I just figured out what it is for - to preview your negatives as positives to see if they are actually worth scanning. If they are, then just switch to RAW capture and scan away!

Of course don't actually use the film scan mode to scan film. It is awful at that. But using it to preview the images is like using lemons to make lemonade!
