I feel that shape is the essence of a visual, and light and shadow enhance it. There are of any number of images where flat lighting detracts from their impact; having said that, there's a current trend towards extreme emphasis on light and shadow, particularly in street photography. Don't get me wrong, I love the work of Phil Penman and Alan Schaller, who use this technique a lot, but it gets copied/emulated so much that it's becoming a cliche.
