One would think that their "benevolent" local government would install public water fountains around town, but that would end an industry......or start a new one-purifying and making the tap water out of the fountains safe to drink.

Very interesting - thanks for the update.

I've seen streetside water vendors in Bangkok, but not ice-water vendors. There, you can find people with portable reverse osmosis (distilling) systems who will re-fill water bottles for a fee. Sadly, I have no photographs of this - but I'm sure you're familiar with this kind of thing too.

Hello rwintle, thanks for the comment. Yes, in Bangkok and basically all over Thailand they have reverse osmosis systems where people can refill water bottles for a couple of Thai Baht (5-7 U.S.cents compared to buying a new bottle at 7-11 for about 50 U.S. cents). I actually have 2 of those machines in the building that I live in and they are used by most of the residents who live in my building.

That said, I have never seen people selling cups of ice water anywhere in the world (with the exception of Myanmar), though I have seen people selling plastic bags of drinking water in Africa.
