Hi everyone!

So, I was looking for some minimalistic camera "bag" that could protect just one camera while carrying it in a regular backpack. There's a lot to be found, but nothing just right in my case. Either too much, too big or not quite the right size. The usual, when it comes to camera bags I guess. So, I figured I could just make one myself. After giving it a lot of thought, a few trial and errors, redesigns and a few more failures, I think I have something that works. For me at least.

This qualifies as a simple, cheap and efficient camera cover. It may not be the nicest or toughest, but hey, you can make it yourself in less than an hour.

So, it's a single piece of 5mm EPDM (some kind of expanded rubber foam stuff) that folds around the camera. You would think that the corners of the camera are less protected and more "exposed" than the rest, but the flap that goes around is a little wider than the camera body, so there's a nice overlap still. I also cut out wedges on the front side for some tighter fit around the lens. The cuts were glued together and then I put a thread around the seam for added strength. Well, just wanted to share something you might like to try for yourself, rather than spending half a fortunes on products you're not satisfied with.

Oh, and if this proves to work well for a long time, I think I'll make one with a little more advanced fitting and have the padding sewn into a polyester fabric with velcro to lock it all together.

Thanks guys!

@goodtimes: Yeah, EPDM seems very suitable for this application. Initially I tried to find neoprene, but ended up with this. My guess is that EPDM is cheaper? 5 mm feels like an ideal thickness. Thicker and it would be more difficult to wrap around.

@B-9: You should! Depending on your camera, you might want to try a different design. The idea with the holes for the lens was the easiest way to lock the sides for me. I have a few ideas for the larger flap but then again I don't want to over-work it.

I actually just made one for my Rolleiflex too. I'll take a picture in better lighting tomorrow and post it.

This is great, thanks for sharing. Love my Neoprene cases, safest way to carry a camera in a plane or on a bike, IMO. Plus less worries about fungus. That material looks even better.

Hi,

The material those old thick mouse pads were made of would be my ideal, the stuff with fabric one side. Or, as I used to do many years ago, a freezer bag around the camera and then roll it up in a sweater or t shirt...

David, I agree, fabric on one side would be better for a pocket style bag that doesn't unfold. This synthetic rubber doesn't slide well on metals. I'm still thinking about a version using EPDM sewn into a polyester/cotton fabric I've been experimenting with. That one would work more like a pocket that could stay in the backpack and allow for a quicker "draw" and insert, while still having a velcro locking lid when not in use.

Heck, I could even make these on demand I think, at least for some camera models... We have a laser engraving machine at work that I think I can use for cutting the sheets, both padding and fabric. I've done the sewing here at home with quite nice results. The question is what people are prepared to pay for something like this, considering what's available from China and Korea... My guess is that it wouldn't be a very profitable hobby ; )

Edit: And yes, I have used a beanie hat for the camera. Works very well too.

Hi,

And I should have said I liked the design; nice to see something designed by a user rather than an accountant, a salesman and a computer geek.

Let us know how the next one comes out, please.

Regards, David

Thank you everyone for the encouragement : D

dbarnes, I was searching my closet for one of those but couldn't find it. If I had, this thread probably wouldn't exist. I'm sure it works great for you - it's a simple solution and that's the whole point.

charjohncarter, I took a few pictures of the Rolleiflex version. It's not very fancy and I'm not sure I picked the best way for folding it, but here goes anyway...

Just put a rubber band around it while you travel and it should be ok. It doesn't get much cheaper ; D

I'll get back to you when I've made fabric/velcro prototypes!
