the 'look' of a lens on a cropped sensor...

is it just me?
or does the look of a lens stay the same on a cropped sensor.

i know the fov changes...a 40mm lens on my rd1 is now a 60mm fov...but the images still look likr they came from a 40mm lens.

a 21 mm lens on my rd1 has a fov of a 32mm lens but the images still look more 'wide' than not, more like they came from a 21 and not from a 32mm lens.

is this making sense?

do others 'see' this as well?

Correct me if I'm wrong but the optics remain the same so the characteristics of the lens remain the same. I equate the end result as being the same as a software crop of a full frame. Obviously the field of view will be smaller on the smaller sensors but the dof characteristics should be the same (I think).

I think it's a simple crop, this is a photo with a 12mm, overlaid with one from an old 50mm both from the same spot, they match almost perfectly

Stuff that shows up on ff, like coma, soft corners, etc., you might never see on a cropped sensor. Those wonderful original Sonnars, the Canon 50/1.2, etc, do favor M8 or RD1, IMO.

It's somewhat like a three legged dog.. You wouldn't love it any less than before the vet took away an injured limb. That is of course unless you need the dog to go hunting. Then you'd have it put to sleep. With lenses its the same.. there are lenses that one likes so much that one will put up with any flaw they have. Without that emotional attachment you'd sell them off without thought.

I find the Leica Summitar and 35mm Elmar draw differently on the R-D1 then on say one of my LTM leica's. The images with the summitar lack dreaminess and the Elmar images seems sharper to me.
So the look does appear changed, though I'm not sure this goes for the POV feel.
