The "M"issing Innovation

I admire that sentiment.

Well, I agree with respect to M8. The size is ok and the picture quality is good. I do like the size of my MPs a little better and the feel as well. Usually, I either have my 2 MPs or 1 MP and 1 M8 with me. Using both together is never problematic because the size factor is disturbing. Now, the shutter button on the digi-Ms goes the wrong way and that is disturbing.

The M while very tempting is simply missing the mechanical frame line selector. After much thinking this is a no-go for me. I would gladly trade video for selectable frame lines. I am guessing Leica will release some special edition and make me pay USD 1'000 for a version with mechanical frame line selectors and no red dot. So, I guess that's what I'll buy when(ever) it comes. I am not in a hurry.

Maybe they will drop the MP at that time and call such a version an MP2...

Have you seen a Nikon D800?
Consider the relative difference there (between Nikon Film vs Digital / Leica Film vs Digital) in terms of proportional size increase with digital.

Leica's doing pretty good.

Last Nikon Pro film camera was the F5 (F6 was, although single F, aimed at the amateur market as Nikon thought digital would be too expensive, as it was with the early camera, for the amateur) and the F5 became the first DSLR so size was the same, no increase. But over the F3,4 point taken.

True, but see #2 & 3. Assuming that CaNikon have enough expertise to design a workaround to the engineering problem posed by certain wides for current sensors in the 1st place, Leica's patented 6-bit coding scheme is hardly a big obstacle for getting lens information to the body.

28 is hardly a superwide...

Whilst not as convenient a look up table, as in the D3 as an example for lenses with no chip, is easy to implement. So easy in fact Leica have done it themselves :D

Is the size of the new M anything to do with the video implementation? The battery is certainly much "chunkier" and there may be a cooling requirement for the sensor. Certainly it seems the more Leica refine the digital offering the less like the film cameras it becomes both in size and the capabilities offered. Consequently the less I want to carry it.
