The M10 has arrived! Which half-case to get?

I keep my Leica camera in a bag during strong rain, but when the times is right for taking a photo, I need the camera out of the bag.

Yes but the openings are on the bottom? If it's raining that hard....they'd theoretically help it drain. But if i were using a camera in those conditions i wouldnt have it in a leather case that absorbs water....?

You need that drainage at battery door..lets the water out...
Then squeeze out the 1/2 case like a sponge at the end of the shooting day..and throw in the dryer..lol..

While it sounds convenient, being able to access the battery and card without removing the case doesn't impress me. In fact, there's something that doesn't feel right about it.

It seems to me Raid is feeling the same thing about it.

Bill the irony here is the M240 and M10 which have 1/2 cases available to them that have battery/SD access doors are cameras who's batteries last quite a long time on a single charge (esp the M240's) and are able to use enormous size SD cards....which is in quite the opposite of the Leica M9 (which I use), whose batteries drain fairly quickly upon use (especially if chimping) and work best without issues with relatively smaller SD cards. Yet there are no 1/2 cases (not even by Arte di mano) that are available with battery/Sd card access doors on their bottom for the M9. I realize location of these items on the M9 may be the reason (compared to M240 & M10) but still...the cameras (M9's) that could use these access doors the most, aren't simply available. I dare say the number of M9's, M-E's, MM1 still in use (and have sold) may be as great or greater than M240's or M10's, so I assume there is a market for a 1/2 case for them with battery/sd card access. Who knows?

I have read at the Leica Forum that the M10 used up its battery faster than the M9, Dave. I am glad that my M10 came with two batteries.

Correct. One single M240 battery seems to last forever on a single charge...all day and more with chimping and lots of shooting. On the other side of the scale is the M9 and I don't have to tell you about that one. The M10 is sort of in the middle....maybe leaning more towards the m240 side than the M9. Having two M10 batteries is good...much akin to having two ice cold bottles of water on a 100+ degree day outside. :).

I try to hide the camera under a rain coat. When the rain is weak, I grab a few shots. I keep my cants dry when it is pouring rain.

The seller of my M10 was kind to include two new batteries. Glad to hear that you find the M10’s battery consumption closer to that of an M240.

Although I purchased a 1/2 case for my M240 when I first got the camera in 2015, I don’t like it now because it makes an already bulky camera more so. More fiddling too for SD card reading, and the occasional (very occasional) battery charging. When I try to analyse the reasoning, I think it was camera protection that led me.

The M10 has been on a reduced diet, so perhaps the case isn’t that bad.

Raid, when I say closer to the M240, I wasn't implying it's really close to the M240. Lets assume we rate battery life in use of the M9, M240 and M10..all used with a moderate use of shooting and a more than moderate use of the LCD screen (like chimping and image review).

If we for example rate battery life relative to only these three cameras....I'd put the M9 at a 1 out of 10, the M240 as a 10 out of 10 and the M10 would be a 6 out of 10...maybe a 7 if one is being judicious of battery consumption in use.

I have always used Luigi cases (as long as I've known about Luigi cases) on my M cameras - both film and digital. The M-P 240 I had needed a Thumbs-Up in order to balance the extra thickness the case added to the already "fat" body. But I don't need the Thumbs-Up on the M10.

Interestingly, although the M9 is just as thick as the M240 I didn't need the Thumbs-Up on my M9.

As to battery life: Quite frankly, I've found the M10 battery sucks compared to anything that preceded it (even the M9)! However, the way I use my camera (even with some chimping), the battery lasts about a full day on an outing.

But even the back-up battery drains over time. I need to charge both batteries about once every 6-months in order keep them at 100% if I use them or not.

Not a deal killer though. IMHO, any of the the M10 variants are the best digital Ms to date!

The M9 has become the backup camera to the M10. The M8 is the backup to the M9.
The batteries should last gor any shooting day.

I know what you mean. A 6 is good enough.

Raid, the M10 is a fabulous camera in so many ways. Those coming from a M9 to a M10 though have various opinions regarding its output (aside from high ISO and mechanical advantages that the M10 has...just simply the images both cameras produced when using the lenses that you're most familiar with. No right or wrong, simply ones own opinion and preferences regarding the RAW image output and look and feel that each camera produces. So in time I'd be interested to hear of yours (opinion)...as I know I have mine.

M10 cases

I bought an M10 earlier this year and pondered the "which case" question. I have used Luigi's cases on several previous cameras and still do. I like the hanging rear flap for the M9, and in addition to protection, the case damps the sound of the shutter/rewind. I also like how Luigi designed the flaps that secure it, and protects the top plate from strap wear.

That being said, I haven't put a case on the M10 in part because I have a grip and Thumbs Up in use, and a strap. I'm enjoying the direct feel of the camera in hand. That doesn't mean I won't get a case at some point in the future, but for moment I'm enjoying it as is.

Inspired by this thread I picked up a cheap piece of pigskin to experiment with, and a few leatherworking tools to try to create a case for one of my cameras. And maybe replace a leatherette or two. Hopefully will turn out OK, a nice half-case costs a pretty penny but good quality raw leather is fairly cheap by the square foot.
