THE MAGIC ROLL RFF CONTEST 2008
One theme! One picture! One prize!

January theme: FAMILY

Get ready for the February Contest: RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES

**************************************************************

 Thou shalt abyde by the ten rules of the Magic Roll Contest:

1. One submits only one picture per month. In order to make submission anonymous, one sends us one’s picture to this address:
magic.rffcontest [at] gmail.com
We will store pictures in RFF ("The Magic Roll" account) and link them into this thread.
NB: if one wants to withdraw one’s picture, for any reason, one can ask for deletion.

2. Pictures have to be taken with a RF exclusively, film or digital.

3. The size of the picture should not exceed 800 x 800 max, but should not be smaller than 600 x 400 either. (So 800 x 600 is fine, as well as 600 x 500 etc. but not 400 x 400 or 800 x 1200 etc.) Optional: one can put a link to a HQ picture.

4. One is expected to specify the camera/lens/film used.

5. One can submit one’s picture from the 1st to the 25th of each month.

6. From the 25th to the 30th / 31th of the month, we take a vote on the best picture.

Note that February will be an exception to rules #5 & #6.

7. One votes by giving points to one’s favorite pictures as following:
picture # x = 3 pts
picture # y = 2 pts
picture # z = 1 pt

One has to pick 3 pictures and gives them points, unless there are less than 3 submitted pictures.

8. The winner carries off a fantastic prize: A MAGIC ROLL OF FILM!!!

9. The winner sets the theme for the contest of the month (x +2), eg. the winner of the January contest chooses the theme for March, the winner of February the one for April and so on.

10. Optional: the winner is expected to post some pictures taken with the magic roll.

hey we never talked about one more thing - can we join the contest marc? it is anonimous - no reason not to be in it.

Last time round the photographers' names were public, and the voting was anonymous.

Now the photographers are anonymous, but how about the votes? Will we get to see who voted or didn't vote for a photo?

I think you two should be allowed to participate, after all, it's not you doing the judging.

Nzeeman, you're right, there's no reason not to participate in the contest :)

But, cause there's a "but" (and Pitxu gave the reason why):
The one of us who handles the downloading/linking part can't vote, because of the anonymity rule. That's the only restriction.

Ok I have to make some comments on this. Thanks to raise the issue, Jon.
The best solution would be to apply the anonymity rule to submission and vote. We can do both:
1. submissions are now anonymous.
2. vote was anonymous last month.
In order to make the vote anonymous, we have to use the poll tool. But the poll tool allows only 12 options, so if there are more than 12 pictures, too bad.
Besides, Nzeeman suggested the "giving point" method, which I think is a very good idea. The only way to make it anonymous would be to send by email/PM your vote to the organizers, who add up points ...etc. That's possible.
Now, why would we like the vote to be anonymous? My guess is that (1) we don't want our friends to know that we didn't vote for them, we don't want to disappoint them (if there's another reason, please tell me). Expectations from friends can put a big pressure on us. But since submission are anomynous we have no reason not to disclose our vote; no one should feel targeted by any vote.
I must say that it should be the same even without the anonymity rule. The anonymity rule has one fundamental function: creating the condition of impartial judgment. But that doesn't mean we cannot judge/vote impartially if the names of the participants and the voters are disclosed (as a teacher - and I'm not the only one here - I do it everytime with my students dissertations/examination scripts). It's just harder.
To be straight, the selecting system of the previous RFF Salon was much more demanding (and rather undemocratic). Twice I had to select a winner, and once it was horrible because there were several pictures that I liked almost equally but some of them were submitted by friends of mine (Nico and Robert Blu). I had to make a choice though, and I did my job impartially. But I didn't like doing it!
That's why I didn't want to use the same selecting system as in the previous Salon. In this contest, nobody is the supreme judge; one man one vote.

Sorry for the long post. Conlusion:
Vote in all conscience. Fair play, fair vote, and fun :) are all the spirit of this contest.

Cheers,

Marc

Hi Marc,
I'm not sure how the anonymity thing will work, eg; When I look at certain images in the gallery, the title may say one thing, but holding my mouse over the image can give the images "working" title, and maybe the authors name. You're going to have to rename all the pictues so that this won't happen, I think ?

Good point Pitxu. Thanks. Then we'll be careful and if needed we'll rename the pictures.

Marc,
from my point there's no need to be anonymus when it comes to voting; for contests and similar I'm expecting from a loyal and impartial friend not to vote me if he doesn't like my photo :).
I understand your feeling but it's just a game and we should be all quite grown!
By the way ... who did you vote!?! ;) :D
Happy new year to you all,

I don't know Marc ... I was just kidding!
No prob :)
Anyway, in the RFF Salon, I've chosen Kanoot; in this contest, I couldn't decide between Jan, lZr and MikeL but I voted for MikeL eventually... the kid is so touching and the mood is magic. But I thought lZr would have more votes. His picture is very powerful. And Jan's picture, well, everything works. Fantastic perspective, great colours, perfect exposure, subject in the background well isolated ... and grat holiday mood. A winner, the winner!
But that's just me.

Fantastic theme ... one of my favourite themes. Can we post some older work
... sorry, just two Efke KB 25 films left ... that's better tool for landscape - tripod
photography.

I think the winner shot is really good and the kid hand is amazing. They deserve the votes

need help/opinion/suggestion

need help/opinion/suggestion

There are some problems we need to deal with. Nzeeman, I really need to know what you think about it, and how you think we can settle the problems.

I just found out that the January Salon has a theme and its own rules:
"B/W only, Street Shooting, Limit 3 Entries Per Photog, RF Pics only, Ends Feb 1"
Besides, voting has started. So I don't know if we can use this tool; I don't want to ruin Stephen Gandy's Salon with the Magic Roll Contest since the Salon is clearly something different.
What do you think?
If Stephen Gandy read this, I would like to have his opinion (maybe a PM is more appropriate): is it possible to merge the Magic Roll Contest and the Salon? We could keep the "3 entries per photographer" rule, but the "B/W only" rules is less attractive. We would need to change the theme too and let the winners of each contest decide in accordance to rule #9)
I think that one well-organized contest is better than several conflicting initiatives.
But what I fear is that people don't find easily the Salon. For instance it took me a long time before finding the link to it. (Ned and other members raised that issue in another thread, I can't remember which one). So this issue should be settled soon in order to make the Contest attractive.
Last problem: could anyone tell me if the link in the description of pictures posted in the gallery, works?
Thanks for your help,
Marc

PS: lZr, I'll deal with your "rolling the magic roll" suggestion very soon. Sorry for the delay. (btw, do you know that it's the title I thought in the first place "rolling the magic roll"? funny you used the same phrase :) )

PS2: my daughter is getting better now. Hope I can sleep this night
