The making of a custom lens mount

So I got me a lathe the other day. With a ready optics module and bit of work, I made a rangefinder-coupled, native M-mount Russar 20/5.6 from brass.

Thanks Roland!

The M bayonet lugs are all in the same rotational plane, so I first turned the common shape:

Then roughly marked the lugs with caliper, and shaved off the rest:

Then it was fine fit into size with Dremel and files:

It's really a job for a milling machine, so I admit it took a bit of time.

I believe this is the only M-mount lens ever produced in Norway ;)

This is really cool - like previously stated, you need a CNC milling machine. 3-D printing would also be interesting to try.
I'd love to do this stuff - just have too many hobbies as it is.

Wanna make me a knock-off noctilux? Lol

Guess I'd need the optics, though. Oh well, nevermind.

Should've left the brass. Looks great either way.

Marc, I meant that milling the lugs is the easiest way to finish bayonet, and I only have a lathe, no milling machine.

There is no need for CNC in a project like this.

One more question, Eugene: you said it's coupled, and it's not a 50mm ..... how did you adjust the RF cam ?

Roland, I profiled the slope with a Dremel and file. I only finished the envelope to match the scale at 0.7, 2m and infinity. It's a work that shouldn't be rushed, so I leave the rest for the coming weekend :)

This is really great, my compliments.

Forgot where I read it, but TomA has (or used to have) a 21 using Summaron googles (using 28mm framelines), hand made by somebody. Just an idea :)

Thanks guys!

Not sure about googles, that's one Leica feat I could never warm up to :) I have a vifewinder optics from Konca WaiWai, contemplating to turn a titanium housing for it.

Jim, the focusing thread is 37mm x 1.5, gives a comfortable 120 degree focusing throw in full range. The filter thread is E43.

I also have a similar idea to rebuild the russar's body to be all brass, and have a clicked aperture dial so it would be faster to change aperture during photoshooting. I wish I could see all of the pictures but some are broken and not seenable on my computer.
