The most expensive photograph in the world

'A world of funny money'.

Anybody feel like making me laugh? I'll donate my account number :D

Nice shot though, shows vision for an 18 year old. Beautiful soft tones. Blushing young lady. Interesting pose & composition.

Would look real good over a designer sofa, too ;)

"What matters to most of those collectors is winning. When art becomes a competitive sport,"

"all it takes to win is the guts and the money to go further than anyone else, and then, voila, you win. And winning feels really good."

Sad, but true.

You could drop that pic into our gallery and it probabaly wouldn't muster a comment ... someone is wrong here and I don't think it's us!

Oh gosh! Yes please [said in the excited childlike tones of Arthur Ransomes "Swallows & Amazons"]

Despite being almost as old as the internet itself I still love the hilarious, if slightly cruel, manner in which this reels us in with our irresistable urge to opine on the efforts and opinions of others.

"Bonjour Henri, assuming you are French, or at least understand it."........only a part, but just so wonderful!

As to Tuna's original post; it seems to me that we all seem to spend more time rolling our eyes at ludicrous auction prices for art than rubbing our hands with glee ( or at least some reaction somewhere between the two ) at the thought that there are people with money out there willing to pay for pretty, interesting, mundane, obvious, 'out-there' etc photographs. Maybe some of us that are currently selling pictures at £500 will one day find we can sell a print for £1M+....most likely not but there's always a chance and the fact that there is any interest at all, surely, is a good thing for photography and photographers?

Maybe.

However, it IS an image of an attractive woman laying down. So, over 100 views in the first few days despite no comments...

I am really fed up with the constant bashing of contemporary fine art on this forum. It just doesn't stop.

Cindy Sherman is probably the most important photographer in fine art in the past forty years. She has been exhibited everywhere, written about voluminously, collected voraciously.

And yet she's talked about here like she's someone with a Flickr account who just happened to scam some fool into paying $4million for a snapshot.

Too many threads with people passing judgment on things they really don't understand...very boring...

Simon, I like your optimistic take and wholly join in it.

Not to discourage those who dare to dream but here, unfortunately, is some pessimistic stuff I recently ran across...http://tinyurl.com/3zlu2bh

And how do you feel about these kinds of people: quote from original link:-

"What matters to most of those collectors is winning. When art becomes a competitive sport," Ross says on the phone, "all it takes to win is the guts and the money to go further than anyone else, and then, voila, you win. And winning feels really good."

End quote.

This is what it is about.

I am an admirer of contemporary photography. I suspect most of the comments so far have more to do with the bidders behaviour than the art itself. It does seem that the amount paid is a bit over the top, however talented Ms. Sherman may be.

So what's a "colour coupler print"? Art speak for your average fuji archive paper? I thought all neg to pos colour prints use color couplers. Sounds expensive, it must be good then. I'l have three please.

I did answer things in short, by referring to the fact that it was a price war by two 'ego's' apparently. But, that said, I have not read of too much contemporary fine art bashing on this forum and as for "passing judgment on things they really don't understand...very boring..." agin I would disagree.

If we leave the judgement in the hands of a few (and it sounds as though they could be the elite few) then we are finished. Yes there is judgment out of ignorance but it is still an expression from an individual and will be corrected or held true by the many; those things are genuine 'market forces' not the ridiculous driving up of prices so that a set of people (relativley few in number) can enjoy their 'art' and have those easily lead and the fawning hangers on pontificate the 'value'.

Just because she is widely known and makes great photographs doesn't mean everything she makes is art and commands the same value.

I might not know what art is (and honestly, I do not want to know), but I can differentiate between a good photograph and an ok (or bad) one. :D

The most likely scenario will be that when the value of our pictures reaches $1M You're going to be lucky to buy a sandwich and cup of coffee for that kind of money.

=(
