Photography is contemporary art.
What is considered as good or bad has more to do with the creative process than the technical aspects of it. Compare a Renaissance paint with today's contemporary painters... Most big artists don't fuss that much about technical things...
And art is a about communicating, expressing yourself. If my vision of the world is contrasty and it means something to me, then how could it be considered bad?
Visit museums, take courses on art history (not just photography history).
Open your horizons man! Open your eyes and see beyond the picture!
Get over it and shoot.

Suppose they reworded it to "I do not prefer an excess or middle grey or high contrast prints to those which were in style decades ago". We are allowed to have opinions afterall.

I 'd agree with the excess of images with a prevalence of mid tones, seems to be a fad recently but so far as I'm concerned it's incredibly boring.

I think the OP has gotten the point regarding blocks, etc.

In all fairness, the OP is not the only person on RFF that holds this opinion regarding B&W from the past. I've seen it in other threads before.

I can't decide which is funnier. This statement:

This picture's main issue is the horizon which is right in the middle and at the very center a tree, the image thus divided by four, a big no in any "art" because the viewers eye gets confused without any point of reference.

Or this one:

"Eh, I don't like the tree photo. I won't say that it isn't interesting, but it's an interesting photo because it's an interesting scene. The composition is bland, but it's not wrong."
