Slobber-knocker is a good term. It means both sides were laying it out the whole game. In American football (you know, with the pads and ovoid) it means they were knocking the slobber (spit) out of each other with all-out hitting ...

I had not known that about Forlan. He still is at the top of my short list for man-of-the-cup ...

Yes indeed. And when Diego Maradona broadcast his talents to European coaches Manchester United came in for him and that made the family financially secure so his sister could have the medical care she so desperately needed. Unfortunately Ferguson, the United coach didn't use him properly and he went off to Villareal. He and Rooney would have made a hell of a front-two but Ferguson didn't have the wits to see that.Who of you knew that Forlan was a talent in tennis when his sister had an accident and then he left tennis and promised his father he would have become a football star to find the money to cure her ?
Really a nice one.

I had the opposite impression and thought the goal was OK. van Persie moved away from the ball (towards the far post) and I don't think the goalie was unsighted. They'll probably replay it in slow-motion a million times so we'll find out soon enough. The player was in the offside position and he attempted to chase the ball. He also blocked the view of the goalkeeper. All in count, that's 100% offside.

yes, that's however a quibble case... Passive offside for sure applies when you're far from the action (or you don't participate? That's the question) AND you don't touch the ball.. here the second case is true but not the first.

I have HD replay in front of me right now.
Well, Holland is in. I guess that's all it matters to most people.
This Uruguay team will be missed.

Three point list, in order of desire:
1. Holland win
2. Holland lose from Spain
3. Holland lose from Germany
The guys on TV still are debating the 1974 World Cup finals against Germany (the ones Holland lost) and I won't have any of that for another thirty years.
Somehow it'll be much easier for the Dutch to forgive Spain for keeping them from the World Cup, than it would be to forgive Germany and I'd like some peace and quiet in my old age...

It was a pretty exciting match, some splended goals by both sides.
For a second I thought Cáceres had killed De Zeeuw with that kick to the face. There was a collective sigh of relief in the pub where I watching the match when he got up.

in my opinion, he is not clearly offside, so goal is valid.yes, that's however a quibble case... Passive offside for sure applies when you're far from the action (or you don't participate? That's the question) AND you don't touch the ball.. here the second case is true but not the first.
Passive offside is when you do not participate to the action, he clearly did since he was on the ball path.

Well, we lost fighting. Forlan could not run anymore!
Kudos to Netherlands, they were the best, and hope they get the gold for the first time!
Football was changed forever by that magic 1974 Oranje team, now may be time to put things in their place, even if it took a generation to do it.

+1 to that!Julio, you're a gentleman!! And must be proud to be Uruguayen!!
I am watching the replay now. Some great goals scored in this match. A lot of little girl rolling on the ground too. I have to say I am getting a little tired of watching the drama queen aspect of this game.

And I think this is the reason why it is always the same teams that end up winning the World Cup. Indeed, nations like Germany, Brazil, Italy or Argentina can easily field two high quality teams in their 22 players contingents.Forlan could not run anymore!
Uruguay, Ghana or Paraguay have a few great players, a good starting 11 but then the quality decreases. So after a few games, they end up tired and are ousted.
The only exception I can remember of is the victory of "bunker" Greece in 2004, but that was the Euro Cup.
Amazing run by Uruguay though !

I don't think the 2:1 was that clearly offside, he had one leg a little behind the defender, didn't touch the ball and was only in its line because a defender deflected the ball from its original direction. hard to decide in real time, but the offside rule says that, when in doubt, the advantage is to be given in favour of the attacker.

I agree Simon. Had the ball not been deflected it would have gone towards the near post, and most likely not in the net. When the ball left Sneijder's foot, van Persie was onside, when it deflected off the defender he was "offside", but there is no such thing as offside when the ball has been "played" from the opposing team. I.e it was onside.

This is the way to lose the game - fight till the last second, give everything. Uruguay really impressed me in this World Cup. But the better team is through and it is fair (offside or no offside). And Forlan is MVP for me in this World Cup.
And tonight is the night.
