The Official RFF FIFA World Cup 2010 Thread

The team that wins in the Argentina-Germany game will most likely also win the World Cup. This is my feeling.

I have always cheered Germany in Football. When England cheated Germany out of the Worl Cup in 1966, I lived in Germany. The streets were deserted during the game. England deserved to lose this year. The 1966 shameful win was revenged. Long live the Queen?

You have a loooooooooooong memory, Raid ... ;)

Actually, I do. I can recall small details. It helped me in my studies. I can think of details mentioned in specific texts and articles. [... and I am not young!]

The German soccer player Grabowski was a very young man then, and in 1966 he was an amazingly fast runner. They wanted to please the Queen, so they gave England the cup. [well, it is a theory!].
They replayed that "goal" that resulted in 2:2 maybe 1000 times within a few days in Germany. Everyone was furious at England. Who wouldn't?
English soccer was always at its best within league games but not within international games. In Germany, things are different. There is a National pride.

Brazil had a shameful loss, so the coach had to take a ship back from England, fearing to face the masses in Brazil. The team took a flight back.

England has always been overrated by the press and as a result people always seem surprised by the fact that a better team knocked them out again. In fact I dont think I've seen an English national team that was anywhere near as strong as people expected it, or the press presented it to be. Legends of the past, yes maybe, but not in my lifetime.

.. but some will say that the football leagues are unsurpassed by any other country's football leagues. Their teams offer very exciting football games.

Finally looks like there will be no surprises on this world cup... At least is been more or less what I said here in the beginning: Germany, Argentina and Brazil... For me the best game this cup will be Argentina-Germany no matter who loses or who becomes champion in the end... And even without goals, Messi is the player I've enjoyed the most...

Cheers,

Juan

Yes, the second goal by England was not a goal. The game would not have gone to overtime if the officials had been paying attention.

The score at the end of normal time was 2-2. The 'goal' you refer to, was the third goal in extra time. England went on to score a fourth. Making the final score 4-2. It took many years of analysis to prove the 'goal' was not valid.

This time Germany were by far the better team, it was a clean game (1 booking each).

I was going to say the same thing. the 'famous' one was the 3-2 in extra time. in one of the replays it takes about 10 seconds to figure out that the ball has not entirely crossed the line ;)
as for the 4-2, there was a second ball and a couple of fans on the pitch, the referee should have interrupted the match.
but hey, why all the fuzz they're more or less even now, aren't they?

England always were and probably always will be rubbish at the international level. See my first post (#18) in this thread. Unfortunately you can't use the adjective all the time, it's a bit disrespectful to dear old Blighty... ;)

The idea that the English Premier League is the best in the world is marketing flak. Apart from a couple of teams the quality of football is dire, but if you like your football played at a constant 110mph, passing to the opposition, cloggers kicking forwards, inability to control the ball, and stupid mental mistakes, then the football is exciting because you never know what calamity is going to happen next. Personally I prefer to watch the Argentinian Primera League, Italy's Serie A and the Spanish La Liga, in that order. At least those guys can pass the ball accurately, which is the most basic skill in the game.

Here's a great quote I found in the LA Times of all places:

"The sad truth of the matter is that England's players, with few exceptions, are an arrogant, ignorant and unpleasant lot. They are paid far too much by their Premier League clubs, where their true allegiance lies, and their ability individually and collectively in an England shirt does not match their swagger."

"It is not too much to say that the worthless and nationalistic English tabloids are reflected in the English team. It's all about drinking, drugs, womanizing, gambling, fast cars and slow minds. Little England written large."

...
On the BBC website there was a comment going something like "if that's how they play in South America why do we bother watching European league games ?" !!!

I fully agree, for me is really hard to watch european leagues, forget about Barcelona... take two minors teams from La Liga or Premier League, the play awful, really bad.

In the last 10 tournaments in Argentina we have 8 different champions. The last one, Argentinos Juniors plays beatiful. Also Huracan lost the championship one year ago, with Bolatti and Pastore -they are now playing the world cup for Argentina-, playing a wonderful football, so nice and generous.

Because that's not how they play IN South America. That's how the South Americans play in Europe :)
...

No, I agree with you. IN South America we play better!

I want to recognise Chile, for moments have showed the most beatiful football in the cup. It is a pity that they are a little limited in technique, they do not have the very last touch to harm. 10 years ago, Chile's football was nothing, and now they do it very well.

Guys
in a sporty spirit please accept my best wishes to everyone.
Actually although I might have different preferences, I think we might have this final fours:

1st / 2nd place, final between Germany and Brazil - with a slight advantage (by feel, not based on anything else) to Germany
3rd / 4th place, final between Uruguay and Portugal - I'd say Portugal but also Uruguay looks nice.

I'm not a better but would be interesting at this point to see your opinions.
Although this is the official FIFA thread and I don't want to overcome it, we might set up a temporary poll if moderators allow that.

We have some interesting comments here!
I stand corrected on the 2:2 goal and the 2:3 goal.

You might be right... This very early game Argentina-Germany is a shame because both are great teams... Both would deserve being in semifinals at least... Today we'ĺl see what Spain can do about Portugal, and what Ronaldo can do against his Real Madrid team mates...

Cheers,

Juan

I think Portugal will have to be very lucky to get past Spain. Argentina v. Germany may be the match of the event. The upset will be Ghana beating Uruguay. Ghana demonstrated a physical presence and scoring creativity against the US that I don't think Uruguay will be able to match. Who knows in Japan v. Paraguay? Finals will be Germany v. Brazil if we are lucky, and something much less interesting if FIFA gets its way.

Jke, Uruguay will pass. African's teams are naive, if the have beaten USA is because USA have also no experience in the game.
Uruguay obtained their second cup in Rio de Janeiro, in the Maracaná against 110,000 fans of Brasil. They are braves.
