The Official RFF FIFA World Cup 2010 Thread

This has been the most enjoyable World Cup of my memory...
What is really great about the game is that anyone can play it, you don't have to be a physical freak. The greatest player in the game, Diego Maradona, is only 5ft 7in in height. Another thing is the simplicity - all you need is a ball (of some kind)... http://nyti.ms/d2YUV9

Germany lost against Serbia a few days ago, and Australia and Ghana won against Serbia...

Anything can happen in a world cup...

If the four teams were to play lots of games one against each other in a different system than just one game to go to the final, I'd be sure about Germany getting the cup, because they're the greatest team this year, but who knows... Of course we all know what would be normal...

Cheers,

Juan

I'm rooting for Uruguay to win the World Cup. Here's a tiny country of just 3½ million people and they're in the semi-finals. They are technically good, have hard men at the back ;) a quality midfield and forwards who can break. They're well coached and organized, and they're lucky.

And they are professional cheats.

Well, it is a hot topic now, but IMHO if you break the rules and are ready to face the consequence, it is not cheating. It's like in basketball - one fouls the adversary and sends him to line expecting that he will miss (especially if it is Shack). Maybe, not exactly the same, but close. Cheating in my opinion is when you escape the punishment or have clear intention to break rule in a way that will not be noticed.

I agree, hence the term professional. Just because you are punished doesn’t reverse the fact that you are a cheat.

Football, football, football. Bringing people together with love.

Sure, in the broad sense it's a tactical foul but in this particular case it was just a very dirty move. It's as if you were to intentionally break the opponent's star player's leg to take him out of the game and you get a red card. You're not escaping the punishment but it's still a dirty move and not how the game should be played.

As an American, I'm not sure I'll ever completely understand the point of the "offsides" rule; it seems to punish initiative, and that runs counter to our culture.

Without the offside rule, it would be a completely different game. Players would be allowed to just stay in the keeper area and wait for the ball. The offside rule is the very base of football, and many American sports have derivatives of it :
- no double line pass in Hockey
- three seconds limit in basketball
- not allowed to line up past scrimmage line in American Football.

All these rules are basically made to avoid one standing in front of the "goal" area and wait for long lobs.

About cheating a bit in soccer:

What is fair, is that both teams can do it...

What is interesting, is that also there (cheating) the best of the teams in that, can find the victory.

Unfair would be "only the team starting the game can cheat." Teams have fought there too: always. It's not about ethics: if one team doesn't cheat at all, the other one will be in clear advantage... It's a part of the game. That's how it is and was, and how it will be... The FIFA could have been using video in real time to correct referees decades ago, but they are not interested, because the game would lose intensity and genious... I don't like it, but that's how it goes.

Cheers,

Juan

It's not breaking the leg. It's having red card and a penalty which is scored in 95% of cases. Breaking legs is dirty. Does FIFA have rules about breaking legs? It's probably in the criminal code.

Some friends of mine have a cat. When it is hot he comes in and flops on the cool tiled kitchen floor. When the children saw this yesterday, the older one said 'Look ! He's doing a Suarez!' . . .

As I haven't seen the relevant games I'm not sure if the cat deserves the new nickname ??

;)
Doing a "Robben" is more like it! ;) :D

WRT cheating, if you play/watch a lot of football it is normal and not considered "cheating" by most. Football has never had a particularly Corinthian ethic, unlike for example rugby. I played rugby for years in England and Ireland and I can't believe the things that go on in that sport since "professionalism" came in. That's cheating of the highest order; what happens in football is child's play by comparison. Also have you seen rugby players recently? They're bursting out of their kit; they're literally not human!

Give me a break on this cheating stuff!

Germany vs Holland in the final? That would be like a "Bundesliga" final. I think all German national players also play German leagues. Most dutch players play in the German league as well.

Funny...

True, you don't have to be a mutant to play the game! Still, I do hope I live long enough to see America's best athletes start playing it. Think of all the wide-receivers and defensive backs playing college football in the U.S.. If they grew up playing soccer instead, we could be the Brazil of North America. Hey, a fella can hope! :D

Ah, gotcha. As I said, I'm a newcomer to the sport so some of the nuances escape me still.

On current form, it looks as if it might be:

Holland 5 - Uruguay 0
Germany 7 - Spain 0

Very lopsided semifinals.

Jjjjjeeezus!

Unlike England or Argentina, Spain does have middle field. And world's best goalkeeper.

Maybe we loose, but Deutschland won't score 7 nor 4 nor 3, not even in their wildest dreams.

(...I'm kidding, we won't loose)

When the Germans work their magic in or around the box area even King Kong couldn't prevent them from scoring!

Looking forward to the next meal ... just two more days !!
