The OMD is easier to focus manually in low light than my OM-1!

Seriously ... after searching through the typical Japanese never ending menu I finally found out how to turn the auto focus off on the little Oly. The manual focus ring on the 14-42 kit lens responds quickly and smoothly and the feedback in the EVF from the lens is instant and progressive. I can focus this thing manually in a very dark room easily and rapidly ... in fact more easily than my OM-1 ... which stuns me! 😱

Fair enough the EVF gets a little flickery in very low light but it doesn't actually effect your ability to focus accurately. When it gets too dark for the AF to operate reliably on the OMD you have the option to focus it manually ... without drama!

If the fly by wire manual focusing of the X100 had been this good I probably would have kept it.

I'm not convinced about the IQ just yet but I don't think that kit lens it came with is anything special.

I have the Summilux on order! 😀

I'm somewhat amazed that out of all the stuff I've read about this camera, no one has mentioned how well it focuses manually!

You're talking out of your hat if you think the manual focus of the X100 is workable. I know it's a great camera and I'm not saying the Oly is better ... what I am saying is for manual focusing the Fuji's a disaster!

It came with the 14-42 ... it looks and feels cheap compared to the rest of the camera. A couple of decent primes and I'll be happy to put it away ... a paper weight maybe? 😀

Not for evf real-time manual focussing no, but for scale focussing in street use, it's more than workable - it's pretty good!

Actually that's one thing that's lacking on the OMD ... no distance scale!

But very easy to focus it manualy on a given point of choice at whatever distance you feel is appropriate ... though you need to have an idea of how depth of field works.

I'm glad the OMD is working out so far for you Keith. I am not sure what Fuji was thinking with the XPro-1. It has got a lot of great things going for it and a lot of negatives against. On the top of my list is the auto-focus, and I think the camera is too big for what it is.

Anyway, there are some great lenses for the M4/3s. My 14-45 Panasonic is a great little zoom. The new 12-50 I think is gonna be awesome. I've been really happy with the 14/2.5 and the 25 Summilux primes. You can't beat the 45-200 for a long zoom for the money.

I am impressed with the 12-50mm but it is fairly big and it zooms in and out more like a camcorder. Just turn the ring slightly and it zooms with a motor. Your zoom time will only be as fast as the motor. No rush shooting.
There is a strange low noise sound from the camera. It sounds like a very small computer fan. I read it was ths IS working but the noise is still present with the IS off.
I had given up on Olympus until the E-M5. This one will do you a long time without an upgrade.

I managed to get the camera quite wet yesterday. I was photographing a bilboard with my Nikon and it started to rain halfway through the process and I wasn't about to give up and go home and have to come back. You have to hand it to Nikon gear ... the camera was on the tripod with water running off it and didn't seem to care less. But ... I hadn't realised I'd left the top of my camera bag open beside me and the Oly was in there ... so it got doused as well. Didn't seem to worry it either though!

I don't think I'll be using anything other than dedicated micro four thirds lenses on this thing ... I struggle to see value in that when the Summilux 25mm f1.4 is not really that expensive and a fast 35mm equivalent won't exactly cost an arm and a leg either. Not to mention these lenses have been designed for the sensor they're being used with.

And maybe a grip to make it handle a little better! 😀

I think once the market realises how good this camera actually is they'll start going out the door even faster!

I just set the 2x tele converter to operate off the Function 1 button ... that was a useful tip in another thread and it improves critical manual focusing substantially I have to say!

I'll be interested to see how soon that happens because they are a difficult camera not to like and I'm struggling to find fault with it so far.

Some buyers may tend to reject micro four thirds more than the camera itself after they dive in to test the waters.

The only thing I don't like is the menu system, it's mega confusing. The manual is pretty pitiful as well.
