Since photographers are usually derided as vultures, i wonder if wolves won't take any offense to the comparison. 🙂

My girlfriend likes photography too, so when we travel we both take photos, but 99% of the time, we're doing it independently. It's interesting to watch how we approach the same building, street, museum, whatever differently.

I prefer to shoot alone...even if given the choice of shooting with other photographers...
When I'm with someone else, even family, my shooting will be different, more rushed as to not slow things down...
The good this about all this is that I know this happens and I'm okay with it...
The last time I shot with others was about two years ago and it was with my daughter and one of her friends..even then I was able to strike out on my own...take my time...
If I want to see other peoples perspective I'll come here or over to flickr...
As far as feeling safer in a crowd...heck I've shot in downtown Los Angeles (skidrow) at 5:00 am and never felt threatened...I've been harassed more at the local mall...

I have never been to these "Shoots" or "Nude Ranches" as they were called out here years ago...I felt they were a bit on the Pervie side...you know a bunch of guys with cameras oogleing over naked or half-naked women...seemed like that was the only way they would ever get a shot of a lady undressed...😱

Yep if you can't go out to any club in a major city and have at least 1 girk arrange to do a photoshoot theres something up. Group glamour shoots seem to be the domain of 50+ guys with too much money and too little sex.

Photography and motorcycling have many parallels for me. They are both activities I enjoy most while solo. I absolutely hate riding in a group. The larger the group the worse it is. The same is true for me with photographing. Both activities are about individual expression/experience for me. Once I get finished either of these activities, then I appreciate having fellow riders or photographers around to socialize with.

You have to watch out for this fella, Big Mikey is his gangland name. When he walks the streets of SF the crowd just parts.

Groups just don't like to shoot with me. Maybe it is because I always shoot with a wide so I can get in close and interact with the subject. While no other photographer is in my way, I seem to be in everyone else's way.
In the shot below, the far left of the frame shows the end of a large group of photographers, each with a DSLR and huge zoom lens trying to find a shot. Meanwhile I have one leg thigh deep in the cattle trough creating my own subject response to photograph.

This is one of my problems when shooting in group and most of time I end up with no shooting at all !

I like the group shooting.
Sociable and instructive way to spend a day.
Different to shooting alone and sometimes distracting but never the less a worthwhile alternative in my opinion.

I think shooting with a friend can be fun but I don't enjoy being with a wolf pack. After years of being a press photographer I don't miss the huge pack of photographers trying to get essentially the same shot. Now sitting down and having a drink and fondling gear is a lot of fun!

I like to do the 'group thing' on occasion, maybe a few times / year. Also don't mind a photowalk with 1 or 2 other people. The key is having this photo outing be just a part of your overall experience, and not the only time you ever get out there!
I don't expect to necessarily get great photos - that's not really the point for me. It's more about networking, connecting with like-minded individuals (at least sharing a similar interest) and so on.
I've also had the opportunity to do this in a studio setup, and it was a good way to get access to lights (all set and ready to go) and gain some experience with the genre before diving in. Got some good shots too (and was the only one using a rangefinder and film w/ studio lights). A bonus was meeting a few talented models who I ended up shooting with down the road.

I met several new people that day, and still keep in touch with 4 of them. This also led to meeting another local photog whom I'm friends with. In addition, 2 people were Harvard PhD's or post docs, so we got access to private buildings, including the Laboratory for Particle Physics and Cosmology (housing an early particle accelerator used for WWII research). There were some interesting archeological pieces as well. They had quite a bit of knowledge of the Harvard Campus, so it turned into a bit of a tour as well with some interesting stories. A bonus is we gathered for a beer afterward to warm up!
You might get to try out some new gear (shot 1st roll of MF w/ a Hassy this way).
It's a good chance to get some shots for the "Shooting the Shooter" thread.
You'll likely end up with a few shots of yourself as well.
