FrankS - Sometimes us young pups need inspiration. While a camera is 'just' a tool to capture our vision, a very nice camera is still a beautiful thing to behold. Thanks for giving me something to which I can aspire holding, much less own. I don't believe I've ever seen one in person. Perhaps one day I can. Those look beautiful. Enjoy them!! 🙂

and now that Frank's objets de l'amour have been and gone, I see I'm at No. 8 on Henry's list.. I expect to have mine worked on in 3 months

Henry is now up to 94.. which equates to approximately 4 years

Ahh... the exhilaration when our old pals come back home looking like new! 🙂 I lived through it a year and a half ago, when my black Leica came back from DAG, looking all spiffy and with a well-aligned RF.

Congratulations, Frank. I don't know how you managed to wait for that long.

One of the problems with the long waiting times is that you may build up your expectations to an unrealistic level. I know, as this happened to me. Unless you are more sensitive than I, you will likely not feel a religious experience upon handling your newly reconditioned Contax. It's very nice, very very nice, yes, but for me, the first time picking up a Leica M was more of a moving experience. Keep realistic expectations and don't expect to hear the hearalding of angels. If you do, that's great, enjoy it, but don't be too disappointed if you don't.

Sorry for the buzz kill. Just a voice of reason.

Chris mentioned in an earlier note about Wolf Umbach -- he may be retired now, but as of only a few months ago he advertised in Shutterbug magazine. He relocated some time ago to North Carolina, since I never knew he was in New York. He did some nice work for me on a Vitessa, and was extremely thorough (sent me the film he shot to test the fix he made of the camera's light leak).

I can't imagine what waiting a year or more for a camera must be like. May your reunion with the Contaxes be a long and happy one, Frank.

Mike, the screw heads look a bit larger than on the other camera, but there was nothing on the bill about that.

These are factory screws. The two screws at the bottom of the front plate of many, if not most color dial bodies are larger than the same screws on black dial bodies. This was a change made by Zeiss Ikon.

Well my II was referb'd by Mr S back in Jan 2014 and although I paid way less than $300 for the beat-up, non-working camera and lens (the F2 collapsible) the work was almost $600. Mind you,it was well worth it; I didn't recognize it when it came back. Works like a dream and so, so quiet.

Wow, is that all?!?!?! I had figured that getting a single Scherer-rehabbed IIa with lens would wind up well into four figures, and concluded that I'd never be able to afford it. I may have to start rethinking my future gear-acquisition plans...

I would like to have used Mr. S as well, but when I looked at his site, and talked to him (very congenial), I realized at my age I didn't want to wait that long. Frank in Harrisonburg (also very congenial) no long had ribbons, and just didn't want to mess with it. Mine hasn't been fixed yet, but I am working on it when I have a chance. I just hope the shutter ribbons I have work well.
