Here is my 20% of the time camera: A blacked out Pany L1 with Nikon adapter and a Nikkor pre (AI(S) 28mm lens and hood. Can't compete with black ZI but still there is definte street cred.😀

The real thing with a crapped out background😱.

NOW you got me thinking ... neat against my M 8 ....

Looks great , but can you use aperture auto ? Is it stopped down metering ?

dee

I do exactly the same with mine - well minus the black tape! It can be used in aperture priority. The metering is stopped down but in practice its not too much problem unless light levels are low, when focusing can be an issue. It will give focus confirmation with V2 firmware but it is pretty sensitive which means that the smallest turn of the focusing ring can make the focus confirmation light go on then off. But its workable and one of the appealing things about the camera is its ability to use most lenses with an appropriate adapter.

I love the design of the L1, too bad it's "just" an SLR 😀 🙂
Shhhh, don't tell. Aperture preferred works very well like the above comment and that Leica 14-50mm (24-100) is real nice. I picked it up for $800 with lens.

I see 🙂

My "Evil-Combo" is a Canon D60 DSLR with good old DDR Praktica lenses (aperture priority works like a charm) 😀
unfortunately it doesn't look that cool 🙂

Akiva, have you considered the OM Zuiko 28/2.8? it's a darn good lens that is smaller and "stealthier" 🙂

Btw, your L1 looks awesome.

well I am actually going to the post office to pick up another Nikon lens (24/2.0). Since I had the adapter and the old Nikkor lens, I guess I feel wedded somehow. But I did a shooting gig for Olympus in 1991. They loaned me 2 OM4Ti's and a whole slew of OM Zuiko lens. Had it for about 8 months. I hated like Hell giving it back. oh so nice.

The least I can find the Panasonic for in UK seems to be £1000 $2000 - about the cost of a Nikon D200 - are you finding used cameras in USA ?

akiva - how does the Leica zoom perform ?

In all honesty the Leica is an incredable performer, the slightest haze in the corners wide open. But I have not yet warmed up to the concept of zoom. But I will. believe it or not, the Leica is my first zoom lens. look on www.pricescan.com, you might find a good price.
BTW, lest you RF er's think I have defected to the dark side, I am still an 80% film guy.

Dee: Amazon.com has had the $800 price on the L1 w/ Leica zoom. That's a damn fine price, though it does signal "a new model coming" to me.

Akiva: How do you find the thickness of the body? As you know, I have a slew of OM lenses, including the wonderful 21/2 ... that would translate to 42mm on 4/3s, and that is my favourite "normal" focal length. That lens is reputed to not be one of the better performers on the 4/3s sensor, but I've not seen definitive information nor have I seen it tested on the L1 ... only on previous Olympus models such as E1, E-300, etc.

I also have a 24/2.8 which I am planning on selling, but if the finances allowed me to purchase a 4/3s body such as the L1, I might just keep it. And of course I do have a 28/2.8 ... they're a dime a dozen and really, really good... and the 50/1.4 = 100/1.4. Damn.

Thickness of the body is a weak point, but I am used to it. I use the Pany for "jobs", events and such, so after 300 shots the thickness is noticed. That Oly 21/2 sounds like a perfect street lens for the L1. I get really nice shots from the Nikon lenses so I am sure the Oly's would perform well.

Not quite sure what this refers to. To my way of thinking its something of s strong point. Because the register distance is small, it means that the Panny can use most other lens mounts with appropriate adapters. Or is it something to do with using ultrawides?

Would you mind expounding on this a bit. I have that lens, and it is indeed fantastic on film. My best photo are made with this lens and infrared film!

As I have contemplated dumping my Nikon digital gear in favor of a 4:3 camera from time to time, I have considered this lens my ace in the hole for that format. But if there are real issues, I should probably know about them! Can you point me to a relevant article or discussion? Thanks!

Without putting words in his mouth ... I think he just referring to the body size in terms of handling compared to his ZI

He would prefer it to be a little thinner; of course I could be wrong
