I finally got round to changing one of the curtains in my green FED2.
I used the helpful instructions here
http://stephenc7.tripod.com/cameras/fed2.htm
which were close enough to this model to be of great help.
One of the curtains had a hole in it and a vertical strip which looked like it could have been burned. I had bought a couple of pairs of curtains a while ago from a seller in the Ukraine, he popped them in with a little camera I had won.
I made a little jig from balsa wood, set up using the old curtains, so that the new one would go back in exactly the same place. It worked very well. A clean and lube of the bits whilst they were apart, a bit of a puzzle as I worked out how the gears are synchronsed and it's now slick. I've yet to spend a little time adjusting the curtain tension, so it hasn't had a film in it yet.
I used a pretty but slightly dinted FED 2 as a practice piece, it may now be another of my favorites. It was interesting to see that a major reason for a gummed up winder feeling was the dried grease under the winder knob, where a small spring acts on the non return linkage, don't need to strip them to get at this.
Have a go at a CLA on your less than favourite cam, get to know it better.
