The Perfect Camera Bag

Interesting,

I'm going to Europe next month and I have been considering this question. The possible kits: a RF645 with 45mm, 65mm & 100mm lenses, or the OM1 (two bodies) kit with a 24mm 2.8, 50mm1.4, and 100mm2.8. I want to shoot both color and B&W, and also low light, so I am probably going to go with the OM 1 kit. As for the bag, I think that I've settled on purchasing a Domke F6, which should work with both kits, I hope.

Small kit, carried everywhere: Ricoh GR-D w/ 28mm VF, couple of spare SD cards, spare battery (all fits in a pocket)

Large kit: Epson R-D1s, CV 35/1.7 Ultron, couple of spare SD cards, spare battery (fits in a small bag or a large pocket)

I'm not into carrying a lot, although I'll probably add a 15mm Heliar at some point, then I'll need to free up another pocket...

Ricoh GR-1 (now GR-D) on my belt. In the bag: M6 with 35/2 asph, plus 50/2, 90/2.8. Depending on the trip, will add another M body.

Film, water bottle, tylenol, ipod, lens cleaner, lens brush, digisix, a few small and large ziplock bags, swiss knife unless i the trip involves air travel, tabletop tripod, cable release, extra batteries as needed, pocket journal/notebook and pencil, sharpee for marking used film canisters, yellow and red filters. I usually line the bottom of the bag with an old llbean waterproof windbreaker.

Overseas, I would also throw in money, maps, pages torn off guidebook, photocopy of passport, important contact numbers and addresses. If applicable, a note with the name, address and phone number of my hotel written in the local characters to hand to the taxi driver when i get lost after a day of shooting in the streets. 🙂

All these in a domke 803 or similar sized bag.

Travel Kit
RD1 and M6 w 35 preasph cron, CV 28, Canon 50 1.5 w/ Panasonic LX2 in my old MClassics Leitz bag w/ three rolls PX 125

Everyday Lately
M6 w/ 35 Cron and Panasonic LX2 in briefcase

I have a camera bag. Almost never use it. So I tuck my R3M w/CV 40mm in my day bag somewhere. In there somewhere is a small plastic box with 2 rolls of film, blower brush and cloth. Oh, BTW I have a nifty Luigi film holder on my camera strap, so that makes 4 rols with me all the time.

Wow, some of you folks do carry a lot of kit around! You must be a lot stronger than I am...

For me, lately:
M3 + 50 cron + light meter, film

Last extended trip:
Nikon FM2 + 35/2 + 85/2, film

If we're talking ideal, wouldn't mind a wide angle and possibly a 90mm to go with the M3. Some day 🙂

Really? Including the Hassy? I have a Bronica, and where IT goes, no other camera does.
My back would break. 🙁

lynn - the SWC is surprisingly compact, no mirror so it's about the size of the 50/4 with an A12back ;P smaller and lighter with A12 than the 40 alone... it's cramped in the Crumpler but adequate room to fit the F100, 35 mounted, 85/1.8 with hood in case, and the leica kit.. though with the leica kit it gets a bit heavy!

No, this isn't about the bag itself...it's about what you'd put in it.

Everyday, everywhere lately my Yashica GT has been in my car.

Walkabout. I'm fortunate (at least I think so) to live in a city. So, I walk alot. I carry a small crumpler bag with my MP with the 35 ASHP on it and my 50 cron and 90 Elmarit with the coupler, a couple rolls of BW400C or XP2, a small cable release.

On trips, I carry a Lowe Pro Compact AW. I have arranged the dividers to handle my MP, above stated lenses, my D200, a 50 Nikkor, a 35 Nikkor an 85 Nikkor, 70-210 Nikkor, an SB800, assorted supplies; batteries, CF cards, cable release, Leatherman, plastic freezer bags, zip ties, cleaning cloth, small flashlight, brush/blower, etc. etc.

It's heavy!~

Depends on the outing, and what I plan to shoot.

If I want to do general shooting, then I bring this with
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT
Canon EOS ELAN 7
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM
Kenko 12mm Extension Tube
Kodak Tri-X, Fuji Superia 400
Sigma 105mm f/2.8 Macro if I plan to do closeups
Sharpie
Extra Batteries

Ideally I'd have something to carry a tripod too.

When I just need a camera, then I carry around, a Digital Rebel XT w/ 50mm, an ELAN 7 w/ 50mm, or my Yashica GSN.

Referring to "kit" rather than a bag, specifically, there are a lot of possible ideal combinations. While 35mm and half-frame are fun, when it comes right down to it, medium format is my preference. For instance, my choice of kit for a driving vacation in the West last year was a small bag with two Bronica RF645 bodies (one for B&W, one for fast color) with 45, 65, and 100mm lenses, 220 Tri-X and NPZ800. And a PhotoTrekker backpack with Pentax 6x7, 75mm f/2.8, 165mm f/2.8, doubler and extension tubes, 220 size Fuji NPH400 film. This was a good grouping, though I used the Pentax only with 75mm.

Obviously you are unaware that this is a rangefinder forum.😱

I said I sometimes use a Yashica GSN for general shooting. Unlike the SLRs, I don't have to lug a bag full of lenses which is nice.

But yeah, I guess I would be an SLR guy.

Due to a developing neck problem which is causing increased nerve pain i may have to re-evaluate the way i carry my kit and how much i carry:

Usually MP or M6 +35/50 luxes (However the 28/2.8 is becoming also becoming favoured) + M4 or M4-2 body, notebook, markerpen, lens cloths, filters, film and ziplock bags.

I favour the Domke 803 and 802's (sometimes the hadley's) but was very tempted by Artist and Artisan's Salgado bag.....

Now it may have to change to a belt combo - (the Newswear.com belts and pouches are very good) That would then mean MP +35 (28 and 50/1.4 or 2.8 in pouches)
then there's the forthcoming M8 to fit in.......+ film, sd card's, batteries, marker pen, notebook.......

and yet i aspire to the one lens, one body combo! who am i kidding? 😀

Heh. Everyone seems to be missing the point. I didn't ask what you carried...I asked what your ideal kit was. I was trying to get everyone thinking about what they think their ideal kit could be.

Mostly, lately, my Fed 2 with a collapsing 50mm in an inside jacket pocket and a Minox in my shirt pocket. Film and meter in one of these other damn pockets.

Otherwise, two OM boddies six lenses, flash, meter, incident meter, bunch of filters, and enough other crap to justify paying too much for the great big bag...

Or an OM bodywith motor drive, 35-70 zoom flash bracket, intimidating flash head and defuser. (a retro wedding outfit?) All in a bag painfully sought out to hold the infernal machine without taking it apart.

Obvious isn't it? I don't have a well thought out kit....

Oh! well that's easy as ideal dosen't have to mean practical 😀

MP + 50/1.4
M8 + 35/1.4 or 28/2.8 (but i'm guessing here till i see the FOV)

But I like my current setup. I've used it to shoot pictures that I like. If by ideal you mean the best setup in the world, then it is definitely not ideal.

Oh! That's easy.
M6, 28/35/50/90mm
Folding flash bracket, Vivitar 273 (yes 273 not 283)
M3 with colapseable 50mm
Minox flash, with shoe adaptor.
Luna Pro F
B&W filters, hoods
Light wt. tripod.
Minox table tripod.
Sturdy yet ratty bag that doesn't scream "steal me!"

Just need to sell the stuff I've got and start over with a winning lottery ticket.
