I would also like to know something about the viewfinder: Is it a standard Viewfinder from a later Kiev or is it a customized one?
My Kiev from 1977 has the small one with the rectangular window on the back.
By the way: very nice work, your Kiev

Well I got my test roll developed today.
Ulford XP2 / scanned /adobe lightroom basic adjustments.
I was guessing exposures and went over a few stops on many shots.
But it focuses correctly and seems to have no light leaks.
Sonnar works well for an old uncoated. No filters used during shooting.

Hi myequation
i am having the Kievs simplified because I have an autistic glitch which loves simplcity -
hence removing the names , numbers , and flash / self timers . The Kiev 4 will have a 3a body which minimises difference for me .
Hopefully , they will be refinished in metallic gunmetal or plain dark grey like wartime Leicas .[ we are ot certain about paint thickness with laquer as well ]
Then engraved just II III IV
I love your camera though .

I love that Sonnar ! It's a similar vintage feel to a Fed 50 / 3.5 collapsible on my Leica M8 I have a tested collapsible Sonnar on the way from Kiev , complete with Contax III , can't wait ... heck it's only money ! Toys all sold now ...no more '' recycling for cameras '' so poverty awaits !

I love the look of those Sonnar pics - good contrast without looking "modern" if you know what I mean. What film was it and any adjustments ?

it was XP2 film, scanned at my lab (day job)
and basic adjustments were done in Adobe lightroom.
Mainly corrected some overexposure which caused the high contrast is some.
Sunny 16 is great until you hike in the woods.

Also rebuilding an old Kiev III to a "flat top" nonmetered model.
And a INDUSTAR 61LD in Kiev Mount.
and..
finished the rebuild on a 1936 Contax.
Pure Contax Parts too.
This is all I own in FSU.

Seeing as you own (and have worked on) both Contax and Kiev, what are the main differences you have noticed ?

Guys, this is one of my favourite topics, i'm seeing beautiful works and photos !! The day I'll find a dirty cheap broken Kiev i want to "train myself" on this kind of jobs, I'm not brave enough to dismount my well wroking Kiev II 😉

I wanted to share my new favorite camera.
This was constructed from many different kiev models.
The main body and shutter are from 1963 this one had a smooth running shutter.
The top housing and prism is from a 1981 model, now I have a hotshoe (after some internal soldering) and much brighter viewfinder.
Some modifications was required to attached an original shutter dail to this top plate.
Name plate and back door is from a 50s model.
The rewind crank is metal / custom, from my parts box.
The Sonnar was found for $33 but i had to preform a full cleaning / cla overall I really like this setup.
Rangefinder has been calibrated and light leaks eliminated.
I'll post some test shots soon.

What an absolutely **EXCELLENT** job! I wish I had your skill.
Reading from the forums, I can see that there are two types of experts here:
Those who really DO WORK and prove what they say/write. They speak of real stuff. Describe actual procedures. And show definite actions which are both practical and doable.
On the other hand, there is another type of expert. Those who just write and write, untill what little issue is there in the piece becomes buried and forgotten in an avalanche of verbal diarrhoea. Or act relevant without really contributing anything objective..
I'll look forward to your work, MYEQUATION, as inspiration! No one else here, so far, has described the inner workings of the Kiev more clearly and succinctly than you have.

Hey Peter, I am doing the same thing to one of mine. I am stalled though at this point. I did fill the self-timer holes and the sync hole with JB weld and then sanded them smooth. I did the same with the front plate engraving. I plan to copy the block script of my '50 using dry transfer or decals. Eventually, I will get it off the back burner again. I need to start looking for a 'scrap' 4AM for that great viewfinder. Excellent Idea, Myequation! One that I will happily copy from

I was tempted to use Araldite Rapid (epoxy resin) but instead used aluminium foil tape both sides of the holes. Currently eyeing the wife's handbags for leather covering :angel:
