Always wondered about this one. Which one do people consider the SLR equivalent of the mechanical Leica M's?

For size, dependability, features, simplicity, and lens quality, the Leica M6 and the Nikon F2 are equivalents in my opinion.

I sure enjoy my Leica MDa with a Visoflex II and 65mm Elmar. I actually wish SLR's were made that way. Talk about solid!!! And well balanced. It makes up for the heavy-ish nature of the device(s).

But, technically, it somewhat isn't a SLR.....

4x F2, 2x F, 2x M2, 3x M3, 3x Barnak's ….. Once you overcome the right and left hand focus and other lens operations… of the two designs. The best of both worlds is your new address.

With long lenses. I have both (FE2), and the M7 (as well as other RFs) is much easier to focus with wide angle lenses and about the same with 50mm.

Pentax MX.

I had an Oly OM1, also a wonderful camera, however it felt "hallower" than the MX. I gave it away to a friend and kept my MX. The vibration is dampened better on my MX, although it is a bit noisier than the OM1 (The shutter and the aperture coupling arm make more noise rather than the mirror).

The quietest SLR I've ever had is the humble Pentax ME, but the vibration is not well dampened.

Although it does not entirely fit the bill (it is not wholly mechanical) in terms of "hand feel" and functionality I would opt for the Leica R4. It's a beautiful camera with access to a range of stunning lenses. Some early versions did have electronics issues though.

If truly committed to a mechanical camera the Leica R6 or R6.2 would be the way to go. According to this quote: "This made the R6 the first fully mechanical, manual-exposure-only Leica reflex camera since the discontinuation of the Leicaflex SL2"
