The street photographer in his elements

HSG have you ever seen Davidson's book Subway? Talk about up close and personal. He was influenced by a subway body of work Walker Evans did.

Its one of my favorite photo books of all time, its a masterpiece imho.

Walker Evans used a hidden camera if I'm not mistaken but Davidson, in a very violent time, risked it all for that subway project and was eventually robbed of his cameras.

Allen, I used to see Davidson in the subway while he was making the images for that book. The subway system was pretty bad in those days!

HSG, I think you are right about Evans and the hidden camera which is much different from the way that Davidson approached his work. One of my favs too. I have first edition that I bought when it first came out and one of my dogs (long gone now) chewed up the cover.

I agree regarding Davidson's Subway book but I've always taken the subway shots from Walker Evans in a different light, well possibly...I'm assuming from that you prefer the upfront risk taking of Davidson. Admittedly whilst I've seen the pictures I've never read or heard too much about W.E.'s methods or personality, so I've often thought he may have been simply reacting to some of the issues of his time. For instance, now you can take 4000 shots of the drunken kissing couple opposite you on the Underground on your phone while they're oblivious to another mobile/socialmedia/selfie/mobilegamer/facetimer phone user. Whilst Evans was taking these in a period when everyone was aware of photography, many could enjoy it as a hobby but very few took photographs in such an odd location...and of strangers. Perhaps it was his belief that using a hidden camera may ensure a more honest presentation than if an openly operated camera was employed in a time when using a camera usually still heralded some level of event.

Davidson on the other hand had his own issues borne of his time to deal with, when it probably wasn't whether you pointed a camera at some one so much as look at them funny. I'm happy to see people use whatever method or technique works for them pretty much, having said that I'd rather a 'sneaky' pic taken than some of the invasive, thoughtless and sometimes verging on abusive methods I've seen in some places.

Just the take I've had on it since seeing the pictures he took.

... did you hear about Noel bumping into Bruce Gilden? ... he was having some trouble with a flash lead at the time ... the great man pointed out need to always carry a backup, then went on his way leaving Bruce to get on with his repairs

I expect he sneaked a couple of hip-shots, like he does

Well, the first pages where an interesting interaction about the video...

Now, it's just personal......and boring and childish....

I came too late to add anything about the original discussion,
it will now just get lost in the quibbling that has almost more pages than the original discussion.

I am not better than any, just late to this thread to contribute anything to the original discussion.

That is forums for ya.

I didn't read all the rest. Too busy, but if the question is shooting people on the bus or train you can do it all day. Put the cam in your lap and press the button. But 99.9% fall under the trash category of "Hey look at me...I just shot some strangers doing northing!"

Frank looks like he's enjoying himself and passing some idle time on the bus-- not a bad idea, I'd say, for an artist to enjoy his art. He probably enjoys it better than playing candy crush, or whatever, on his cell phone. Maybe he doesn't even have film loaded.

Gary, looks that way to me also, or maybe this is a new challenge for him, and he going to use the video to see how others are reacting to him with a camera that he is using to take a shots on the bus?

He does look a bit timid taking a few photos.

4 pages & no one has asked what kind of camera was he shooting with? I thought this was a gear oriented site.:D

So let me be 1st. What kind?

My gads man, you've been here since 2010 & don't yet know who Noel is?:D He's a "not so" common chap who pops up in Michael Markie's photo's wearing a floppy hat (which I like) & sports a nice bag.:)

Indeed he does.
