Australian Christmas timing is kinda strange, isn't it

Wait until you see Santa in miniscule swimwear and on a surfboard on Bondi - and lets not even talk about Santa's helpers. It is a bit disconcerting for someone from the cold north to celebrate Christmas on the beach - but after a couple VB's or XXXX's it makes complete sense!

Interestingly, there is just a comparison of both lenses in the Japanese "Camera magazine, issue 11".

Could you summarize their overall findings?
That would be very helpful.

They provided mostly sample photos (Some high-key stuff of a model) but I will try to read what they wrote and summarize it.

I like the thought of the heliar 50/2 collapsible, but it seems that collapsed it doesnt really offer much of a size advantage... insofar as it doesnt collapse all that much. :|

Indeed!
And I could not help myself, just placed a deposit with Cameraquest for a nickel 50/2...

Fergus,
Will you then sell your non-Nickel Heliar 50mm 2.0?
It's a nice looking [black] lens.

Yes I will sell the black lens.
How much is a fair price for this lens? Any ideas?

Hi Robert,
I assure you that you will be happy with either of these lenses. I started out getting the Heliar 50mm 3.5 LTM, and now I have on loan a Heliar 50mm 2.0 M which I will most likely buy. The Heliar 50 2.0 is a great lens when used at 2.0 for portraits and scenics while the Heliar 50mm 3.5 is in a class by itself.

It's comments like that that keep me thinking I should grab one of the nickel 3.5's too!
I wonder how generous santa is feeling this year?

Fergus,
If you can afford it without big problems, just do what makes you feel good.

I had the CV 50 col in M mount. It is a sweet lens. I ordered the re-issue 3.5, but hanen't had the weather to go out and shoot. The few of frames I've gotten, convinced me to sell the clssic 50 CV m mount. I will keep my 50 crons, but the 3.5 CV is looking real good so far. I am debating if I should get the LTM version now. The comparisions between the Classic M Mount, verses the new 2.0 I am thinking I might need both. I have the 50 'cron in both M and LYM mounts, but the choice is getting thin.

Got my 50 3.5 Heliar a couple of days ago from Mainlinephoto here in Oz. I love the nickel finish but its so tiny. (My Hex 50 2.4 collapsible looks like it's been on steroids in comparison.) It's been 39-40c here in Adelaide this weekend so I haven't been able to get out and road test it unfortunately. One question from someone who only came to rangefinders a few years ago. What is the purpose of the infinity lock? Cheers Alan

Good to hear that the nickel finish is nice! I have the 50/2 on the way.
Santa is running early this year... a 4x5 pinhole is also in the mail!

Alan,
As you are one of the few to actually have both lenses, would you care to post some comparison shots between the Hex 50/2.4 and Heliar 50/3.5?
Would be greatly appreciated.
Best, Horea

Does anybody know if the 50/3.5 will collapse safely into the Zeiss Ikon?

I wish I had a Hex in my recent 50mm lens comparison. The Heliars (2.0 and 3.5) did both very well.
