Deliberately took my Yashica Electro's lens out of it's comfort zone to see what it would do ... with an interesting result. How did this camera deserve such an iconic lens? 😛

Yep, that's a cool effect. Not a bad lens. Yashica electro, you said, but what lens? The Yashica's use a Copal leaf shutter, rather than focal plane, right? Could that have something to do with this strange and fortuitous effect? The shutter will be opening from the center, dilating and then contracting again. In addition, the usual effect of the diaphragm could add it's own signature. I don't know, it's odd.

That lower aberration looks like HAL from 2001: A Space Oddyssey!

I love that little 'space needle' thing!

That shows up on Jim's Canon 50/.95 image too; although, it is not as sharply defined.

what was the source of flare in these shots, Roland?

Both were night shots, Ray. In the first there was a Halogen light hanging from
the ceiling, in the second a candle just outside the frame.

It seems there are good and bad flares. I don't like flare with "ghost" aperture blades, that's (very) bad flare IMHO. I suspect that it's a problem of SLR lenses rather than RF lenses, but some pictures here prove me wrong. I had the same kind of ghost with my Pentax SMC 50/1.7, but I've never experienced that with any of my RF lenses: Industar 50, Jupiter 3, 8, 12, Elmar 50/3.5, Summitar, Nokton 50/1.5, Color Skopar 35/2.5 or Rigid Summicron, or Planar ZM. (I didn't own them all at the same time; at this moment I have only the Summitar, Skopar and Planar)

1. FSU lenses
Industar 50 (1976) : bad flare control, not pleasant.
Jupiter 3 (1953): no good flare control, but ok.
Jupiter 8 (1955): good flare control, or at least pleasant flare effect.
Those FSU lenses have been used without hood, so I guess their resistance to flare can be improved with the appropriate hood.

2. Leica lenses
Elmar uncoated (1939): good flare control, no problem when shooting almost into the sun. I’ve always used this lens with the FISON hood
Summitar coated (1953)/uncoated (1940): bad flare control without the hood, good flare control with its barndoor hood, which I use most of the time.
Summicron (1961): bad to terrible flare control without hood, better with its hood.

3. CV lenses
Nothing to say. Excellent flare control so far.

Jupiter 3 (1953): the sunlight affects the upper part of the picture. No bad.

Jupiter 8 (1955): shot into the sun; pleasant flare imo.

Elmar uncoated (1939): no flare issue; here I didn’t shot straight into the sun, but almost, as you can see from the shades. Good lens.

Summitar (1953): I wanted to have some flare effect here, the result is not bad.

Summicron (1961): surprise, there’s flare here! Shot inside, in a café. I didn’t thought diffuse incident light would produce flare here, let alone the Summicron couldn’t handle it. Bad!

Expected behavior, I think. As long the length of the lens, more flare to expect. The light is reflected before falling on the sensor or film. (D)SLR way of life.
