The vented lens hood

the vents allow you to see through the hood when it blocks a portion of the finder.

the hood or the vents?

the hood helps control flare depending on the lighting conditions and angle of the sun vs. camera & lens.

the vents can help by adding just a touch more to the sightline. it's an almost psychological edge but it's real too.

yeah, its really frustrating having a shade that blocks a portion of your view. Vented hood still kinda block, but you get used to it since you can see thru it.

they also provide better ventilation, which is important if you shoot a lot.. you don't want your barrel overheating 😉

Yep they look cool

I swapped a vented hood with parallel sides (on table next to M3) for one with slanted sides (on M3) primarily because, I admit, the new one looked cooler.

But, the slanted side hood does block less of the viewfinder.

Both are the same manufacturer as far as I can tell. They are the same type of hood that Heavystar sells.

Maybe I'm just trying to justify buying a Zeiss vented hood for my Planar, but they must help prevent some flare, right? They do block some sunlight coming in at an oblique angle. I don't see why they would do less good than a non-vented hood of similar depth - the sun would have to be at just the right angle to come in through the vents and cross the lens in such a way as to cause flare. They won't help if you are shooting right into the sun, but neither would a non-vented hood of the same size. Am I missing something about the way they work?

I agree with pdx. Why wouldn't a vented hood work as well as a non-vented of similar size? As long as the rays are intercepted by the hood, it should work.
