Thank you all so much for the kind words! I'm afraid I've only just stumbled upon this thread so I'm embarrassingly late to the party!
I have to thank Brett (Sarcophilus Harrisii) for sharing the backstory (although I must correct that I'm only just 25 and have been shooting 35mm on & off for about 4 years
).
Film has always felt scary and inaccessible to me and I've always just paddled with caution in the shallow end. Since moving from England across the globe to New Zealand and now Australia, I've been pushing myself a bit more to be less hesitant, until one thing led to another and the 'Finding Vivian Maier' documentary landed in my lap, giving me the itch to try Medium Format. Ultimately, I wanted to produce high quality portraits on film whilst in stealth mode
I was put in touch with Brett via mutual Facebook friends, and long story short (Brett has already given most of the details), I flew to Tasmania to test out a Rolleicord Va under his knowledgeable wing. The self-portrait in the mirror was on my second roll of 120mm film ever, and was completely inspired by the woman who inspired me to get a TLR in the first place. It felt only right to honour her this way.
It wasn't until later that Brett mentioned there was a Maier competition here on RFF and that I should enter a few shots. I've always found this forum in search results when I have a film query, but I was unaware how much of a close-knit and talented community it is. I couldn't believe the quality of the all the entries for this competition and it was pretty daunting, to say the least, being a novice amongst a sea of experts.
I'm aware that the votes were low in comparison to the activity on this site and in some way it feels a bit fraudulent to be a new member here and win - I hope I haven't stepped on anybody's toes. I do think it's exciting to be a young (in experience) member of an established community and I hope I can share some of my newer work in the various threads here as I get through more rolls of 120mm - especially as I've started to shoot slide film on my Rollei which I'd love some feedback on, as I don't know anybody in person to talk to about it
I can't thank Brett enough for his help and guidance to get me started with MF, from loading the film to developing it - It's been the absolute dream introduction and I would probably be very lost without him! And for inviting me to join this community which I'm really excited to be a part of.
Of course a huge thank you to Stephen (CameraQuest), too, for hosting this competition with such a fantastic prize. Having only just acquired my first Rollei it's slightly insane to gain a second already, but it'll be perfect to take both out and shoot B&W and colour simultaneously. I'm just praying my collection doesn't get any bigger any time soon as I'm a travelling girl with just a backpack and camera bag, and the three (soon to be four) cameras and film alone are almost weighing more than my clothes
