The Way of the Gear-Head

An excellent read. I loved the mention and responses of the sheer joy of using classic cameras....the only thing I can add is the way you feel when you use them, like stepping back in time....Kennedy, Sinatra, and Coupe de Villes....
I especially liked the response "I feel my youthful enthusiasm returning.....", and on the Darkroom thread the fella who wrote regarding your first home-developed film: "....check your negs, then throw open your window and in a loud voice announce to the world that you've done it!" That's what it's all about, and threads like this are what the RFF is all about.

Excellent article, Bill. Well said.

I build my own computers, used to build my own firearms (I agree there, too...too much work.) As I'm typing this there is Zorki 4K sitting at on the desk that arrived in excellent condition except that the shutter speeds couldn't be set. It's fully functional now, and the pleasure of using something restored/ repaired with your own hands can't be measued with money.

Well, leave us not think that I'm some kind of mechanical marvel. My own Zorki 4K fell into pieces in my hands, I was unable to repair it, I gave it to capn slack, who traded it to gman, who fixed it in like 2 seconds. OK, I can do a COUPLE of mechanical things. But not that much, really. I just like it.

Best Regards,
