There goes film camera prices...

Luckily there is not a single M camera in the list, a M3 should have been, and instead of choosing an FE2 or FM3A, two of Nikon's best manual focus SLRs they chose a FM10. What a joke. Whoever made this list half assed it.

OM2n should be on there.
Nikon F100 should be on there 11 times.

Agreed, but the addition of the Fuji rangefinder makes me think the person who wrote it SORT OF knows what they might be talking about...

BTW, I hate Gizmodo because if you follow a link from overseas that doesn't specifically say us.gizmodo.com it takes you to the home page of their regional site. It's so frustrating.

summer is the perfect time to get into film, the perfect time to make seriously artsy photos.

If you live in Brooklyn, how could you not want this Hasselblad swinging around your neck?

What a wank! Someone needs to hack that site and remove this rubbish! 😀

some ok cameras on that list but i was happy to see no Leica M and no Olympus OM ... we don't need the prices to go up.

We could make you own top 12 ... what do you think?

I'll start with a few i like in no order

Leica M3
Olympus OM-2
Nikon F4
Sinar 8x10

😀

Our quirky film cameras are in danger of becoming like one of those 'discovered' tribes in a hidden high altitude valley in some far flung tropical evironment. The bulldozers will soon be moving in to build an air strip ... so everyone can appreciate how special we are! :bang:

😀

Encouraging the use of film cameras will increase the use of film, which will lead to more choices and better prices for film stock. You should try to convince as many people as possible to buy and use film cameras.

Good list!

My take:

Leica M3
Olympus OM-2
Minox 35 GT
Hasselblad 500 C
Hasselblad SWC
Mamiya 7

heh... that piece is kind of humourous in a 'new enthusiast' way. Here's one person's thoughts. I might frame this.

"You can achieve very high quality results with old film cameras by developing the negatives and then digitizing them with a dedicated photo scanner at highest resolution. The dynamic range can be amazing and the images have the "feel" of film. It does require you to shoot more carefully since multiple exposures can become expensive."

my top 12:

4x5 crown/speed graphic
Hasselblad 500cm/swc
Rolleiflex E/F
Nikon F/F2/3/4
OM1/2/3/4
M2/3/4/6
Rollei 35 T or S
MX/ LX
Contax RTS/RTS2
Canon F1/EF
Hexar RF/AF
Barnack Leica

Over all, I think this is a good balanced look at highly available cameras that are currently good deals and likely to be in working condition.

AE-1s and the more common Nikon bodies are all over the place and are dirt cheap. In MF, the Mamiya 645 and Bronica SQ-A are great deals.

While I agree that the OM series, Ms, etc are wonderful cameras, I don't think they necessarily fit on this list.

How can the best SLR ever made not fit on this list ... I'm shocked! 😀

While there may be some "new adopters' turning to film I'd be willing to bet that, as digital tightens its grip, the number of people leaving film is still far greater. This can only mean that there will be more cameras lingering on shelves and in closets. All you need to do is coax them out of hiding...
