Think of move from 35mm summicron to zeiss 35mm 1.4

Honestly, I have never tried the Zeiss. But I won't replace my 35 cron asph anytime soon. It is that good.

I completely agree, I am 100% clear that either lens won't make me a better photographer, but maybe a happier one? haha

The cron is a terrific lens in almost everyway for everyday use. I have a 50mm f/2 from zeiss, the color and rendering from is something I never get from leica. Then all of this begins...

Impressive photograph and demonstration of the point that all good photos are about what the lens is pointing at: the subject, composition and the light. Differences in lens renderings – bokeh and sharpness – are secondary considerations by far.

The ZM lens looks like it might be the "best" 35mm M lens you can buy but I doubt it is worth selling a Summicron for.

I had the 35 cron asph for about 4 years. I find that it is a high contrast lens and the perceived sharpness might attributed by the high contrast. It works well with soft and dull lighting. But I dislike how it performs in bright daylight conditions because it is very difficult to tame the highlights. I recently just sold it.

I think the Cron Asph renders plenty smoothly. It's about using the light.
Harsh light will result in harsh contrast and give the impression of harsh rendering. Light your subject the way you want it to appear.

Shot with Summicron Asph 35:

Nothing clinical about those. Beautiful in every way.

I can't comment on the Zeiss but the cron ASPH has been my choice when I decide to get a modern design 35mm lens (it was an addition to my vintage Summaron 2.8, still own both)

Nice images, a dum question, how to attach images in posts? Link or actual file?

New pup. Seems happy.

Leica M, Zeiss ZM Distagon 35mm 1.4 @ 1.4

The main thing I have noticed in the image quality is better resistance to flare compared to my Summicron Asph.

I can't say enough good things about the ZM 35/1.4. Unless you NEED a small 35, it's incredible. It's got the rendering and sharpness all in one, for half the price of an FLE. Just get one.

Only bummer is that it really intrudes into the VF on my Leicas due to the length.
it is much better built than my other ZM lenses (Planar and Sonnar 50) - matches the build quality of my Zeiss ZF lenses (Nikon mount).

I definitely agree with all of the above - it is optically the best 35mm lens that I have used.

However, you really should aim to try one before ordering. Reading that it is quite a big lens is very different from experiencing it. My biggest reservation is its length - which if you are as clumsy as I am makes it prone to banging in to things when walking around with the camera over your shoulder. There is also some significant finder blockage, but it is still very workable.

It is the sharpest lens that I have on the M7, but I suspect that this is as much due to the weight than to the optics. It is surprising how much less "kick" felt from firing the shutter with this lens attached vs any other lens that I have (maybe I need to service the camera...).

The cron has wonderful sharpness, however, the rendering of the lens sometime could be a little dry for my taste, the zeiss has the sharpness as well as rich tonality (from what I’ve seen online).
Same feeling, does not like the rendering of the Summicron ASPH. Zeiss 1.4 is a good choice.

Rented the 35/1.4ZM twice and wound up buying one. Build quality is excellent. If I could only take one lens this would be it. It's a tad big/heavy but not excessively so. I think the bulk of the weight on the lens is toward the rear so it still balances fairly nicely on an M body.

I already had the 35/2.8 C-Biogon so now it's a two-lens 35 kit. The Biogon when I want to go really lightweight. That lens is so ridiculously good considering the price why not get both? Both these lenses optically kick the ASPH Cron's ass, speaking from experience.

Dump that ASPH and don't look back.

First 12 photos or so on my feed are from this lens.

Currently owning both the cron Asph and the ZM 1.4 I'd say that statement is, how shall I say, a little silly.

The advantage in actual use that I see for the ZM lenses are in flare control. They have that down. The Summicron Asph however is a spectacular lens, and tiny given it's speed. It is smaller and faster than the Biogon 2.8, and far better built. The ZM 1.4 seems to have a much better build than the other ZM lenses, and the size differential is accommodated for by the speed.

There are no bad choices here. If was only a digital shooter, then I don't think the 1.4 is necessary as you have a far wider ISO range. But as I'm am mainly a film shooter, I find fast lenses a necessity unless I only want a narrow shooting envelope. The Biogon 2.8 is too slow for me for that reason. Asph is good. ZM 1.4 is better.

A lot of comparison around between the Summicron 35mm and the Zeiss 35mm 1.4

For a while I wanted to upgrade my 35mm lens (currently using a Voigtlander 35mm 1.4) for my M6 and Monochrom I found a nicely priced Zeiss 35mm 1.4 and I was ready to be settled. Just yesterday I found a Summicron 35mm ASPH for almost the same price so I'm a bit in doubt now. ..

Any thought on those 2 lenses in 2020? Is it still a matter of size/weight for the Zeiss?

I would look into either the new Voightlanders 35/2 Ultron or 35/1.2 Nokton III b4 I dumped more money into Leica or Zeiss. In my limited experience with the ultron, it's better made then the 35mm Summicron ASPH with a similar optical quality. No experience with the faster lenses, and the Nokton III is being released imminently.

I don't worry about my lenses somehow becoming outdated since this is not really an issue in photography. Use what you already own, and enjoy the results. My mostly used 35mm lens is a Version 1 Summicron 35/2. Once in a while, I use my Canon 35mm (2.0, 1.8, 1.5) or the Biogon 35/2.

I also often use a pre-asph Lux 35.

Still have both lenses, and my thoughts have not changed in 2020.
🙂

But I'd wait and see how the all new CV 35 1.2 VIII shapes up. It is meant to be released in a few days, and if it is as good as my CV 40 1.2 then that would be the one I'd get.
