This Ikon is driving me insane...

Should have bought an M

What an extremely helpful response 🙄 Honestly, if you have nothing substantive to ad then why respond at all, especially when you come off as condescending to boot?

To the OP: Imho, contact Zeiss directly and I'm sure they will try to help. I'm sure it won't completely make up for what you've had to endure but at least you can attain some sort of closure. Good luck.

Holy hell! 8 minutes after sending my email, I receive a reply from Richard with a Fed Ex number to cover the shipping cost back to him. Says he'll personally inspect the replacement, too. As difficult as this has been so far, I can't help but be a little impressed!

Yeah, I emailed zeiss Germany with a question about their SLR lenses - specifically which were coming out for ze, and if it was in fact for ze (eos) mount at all, and I got a personal letter back very quickly from someone high up hinting that I was correct in my assumptions. A week or so later I received a full zeiss camera/optic brochure package in the mail sent by zeiss in Germany.

Their customer service is pretty brilliant.

richard seems to take it personally when there are problems. i have heard nothing but good things about both his and zeiss's customer service.

I hope you stick with it.

More people these days use Leica's than ZM's. You're keeping Zeiss in the M-mount business so they will continue to support us with great glass! =D

Hehe maybe you should push for some 'freebies' for all your trouble...

And Leica can provide what sort of service compared to Zeiss?

After reading this thread and noting how Zeiss handled this case ... I'm glad I have an Ikon and have just bought another Zeiss lens!

Too bad ,very sorry. These are known problems of the Ikon and also the earlier Konica Hexar RF. Personally I would never trust these cameras at all (and based on experince with the Hex)
Well, even Solms has screwed the pooch on occasion, based on some people here relating issues with the occasional new M body or lens. Happens to everyone. (And don't get me started about my two new Pentax LX bodies from way back when...) By contrast, both my purchased-new Hexar RFs were trouble-free out of the box; one body developed an odd shutter hiccup about four months in, was sent back for service, and it's been smooth sailing ever since.

There are "known" problems with almost any manufactured product no matter what it is and who makes it. I have had two M6 bodies first one the strap lug pulled out of the body second one arrived with a shutter that was running about 30% under - fault shutter was fixed lugs the red bods claimed had to be my fault and no amount of pushing mailing phoning etc could even get them to have a look - it was finally replaced under insurance using leica refusal to even look at it as "proof" that it had been accidently damaged.

My ZI which was purchased within a two months of their launch has worked perfectly from day one. Has as my rollei sl2000f which is now almost twenty what ever years old - but of course it has "known" issues it is just that I have never "known" any of those issues with mine.

Personal opinion but I guess we hear less about people buying duff leica stuff mainly because holding a very expensive piece of non working metal does make you feel a bit stupid

BTW the fix for pulled M6 strap lugs is to use lugs from a zorki 4 which have the same diameter thread but a slightly coarser pitch and hey presto the -leica engineering both german and russian -

Back in august of 2009, I purchased a brand new Zeiss Ikon. I found that a few days after I received it, the grip began to deteriorate. I sent it in for a warranty repair, and didn't get it back for several months; when it was finally shipped back to me I found its rangefinder to be completely out of alignment. It was incapable of focusing near infinity!

SO, I sent it back again. Today, almost six months after my original purchase, I receive a replacement Ikon in the mail, only to find that its rangefinder is misaligned vertically! I feel absolutely insane for putting so much money into something that has given me nothing but trouble. The whole process has made me feel ill 🙁

"Several months" for a warranty repair? Something´s wrong there on the dealers part...

Hi OP,

Glad your ZI problem is getting straightened out this time. I am a hardcore Leica MP user -- I have 2 bodies and they have been such reliable cameras! That said, I have admired the ZI VF for a long time. Over the last few years, I have been tempted to try out a couple ZIs; the first 2 I returned as they had alignment problems.

Just a month ago, I decided to try another ZI because I had read about the newer ZIs having some improvements, of which one being a more reliable and hefty VF. So I went for a third ZI. I couldn't be more pleased and glad that I have a ZI for use with both my 50s/35s on the street, as it is so effective in low light shooting while in aperture priority mode.

The irony is that the one thing I don't like about it is the film loading; I prefer the older M loading as on my MPs 😉 Seems there is a saying about old dogs and tricks 😛

Again, I hope it will work out splendidly for you, OP.
