Several times, when I've tried to reach the site, I've received automatically generated messages that it is off line.

If I wait an hour or so, and try again, sometimes I can reach the site.

What's up?

I have not noticed this recently with this site, but have done so now and then previously.

One possibility is that the site is not down but your connection to it is having difficulties. Try the following if you are still having unexplained issues. First clear your browser cache and history - if you don't know how, Google it -its a simple process. Then do the same with your DNS cache. The DNS is the system that helps your computer find stuff on the internet and if the DNS Cache gets confused it may respond saying the requested site is unavailable. If it gets corrupted somehow or is not responding it creates that problem. Technically this is usually referred to as flushing your DNS cache. It is a marginally more awkward process as you need to run a command using your PC's command prompt but its not too difficult - once more Google it. These actions at your end may (or may not) solve the issue but at least if you have done this and it has not fixed it then you know that is not the problem and it is something else. I have used it form time to time to rectify connection issues to various sites.

Thanks, peterm1; however, I had just left a site which I know is sensitive to my cache's contents. I know, because it's my work site, and I had no problems there this evening.

However, tonight, Wednesday, October-18-17, when I clicked on 3, to open the most recent page of the Postcard Project #9 thread, the site simply hung, i.e., nothing happened except that my browser indicated it was connecting - but it never did.

So, is there soething singular about the Forum site, or the way it deals with a cache?

Just through observation, RFF is inaccessible (almost?) every day for about 10 minutes starting at 2220 California time (GMT -8 hours) probably for maintenance/backup.

I find it's off frequently or won't load a post. It just times out. I receive a message from the west coast cloud service saying they can't connect to the host.

I've PMed John about it but, just gave up complaining about it. Now, lets see if this loads?

Just left a long post, in reply to Shawn, to the camera sensor thread. It didn't post. I reloaded the site and the thread showed I posted 1 minute ago. I went to check it and it wasn't there. When I went back to the main page, the notice of my post was gone. I've experienced variations on this theme many times.

I find that, given that what I write will get lost, I think I'm wasting my time in submitting anything.

Faulty software?

Edit:
I had to check to see if this one made it..

Just dumped off again into the second paragraph on the same thread. I had to re-authenticate to get back on the site. What a ***** waste of my time!

I've had a post within the last two weeks that didn't display, so I guess it's lost in the ether.

There are lots of things that can make a site go weird, such as Denial of Service attacks, weather, servers going offline, oh, and the occasional forest fire.

I'm surprised the site isn't down more often.

Stephen; getting a message from your cloud server in san José, ca saying it can't connect to the host .. with a graphic showing a big red X in the connection between the cloud source and the host has nothing to do with my OS. It assures me I'm connected to your cloud server and states it can't connect to the host.

It occurred to me that the cloud farm is in san jose because that's where MAE West is now.

This all began when you went from http to https. A good thing, but not glitch free I think.

I'm on Comcast high speed, connected to the SF ATT fiber back bone at 4th and Folsom. I'm no expert but, I'm on other forums and do a fair amount of on line work, with no issues.

I got dumped off again yesterday evening. The "No Connection" message and graphic came from Cloudflare's server farm in San Jose, CA.
How about trying Chrome, just as an experiment, and see how it goes? Microsoft Internet Explorer, despite its popularity, is often a problem for RFF's software.

Hi Doug;

I'm not a computer expert but, ran a large multi router WiFi network at work (1000 customers). This is not a browser issue. It's a problem with the cloud farm I connect to and the host server. Maybe re-read my previous posts?

See #13

To be more clear, often when the site is not connected to the host server, CloudFare directs me to an archived, non interactive version of RFF. I hope this makes some sense to you. You might talk to Stephen about CloudFare's involvement in the RFF delivery chain.

I can go downstairs and get on a MAC, it won't make any difference in the cloudfare to host issue.

I use IE and chrome at work one one computer and chrome only at home, on two different computers. I've never experienced an issue personally.

When I got dumped off the site... again today, I copied the message from Cloudflare.

I've seen such errors, too, though not very often.

There is nothing you can do about it - except being patient and trying again later.

I get them several times a day here at times. The redirection to the archived site may not be noticed by some.

The outage can be a few minutes to several hours.. to the better part of a day. I gave up complaining about it until this thread came about. I think most don't understand / believe the problem exists as I kept getting suggestions that my browser was at fault.

It's a pita, because I have to reauthenticate to get back on the site and then reestablish any settings. So, the server is losing user data.

It's happened several times when I've been a couple of paragraphs into a long technical post. I just gave up posting anything long.
