Has anyone seen this? Item #3868003170 on ebay. For what this guy paid for this sure would buy a lot of film!

keerikey! that much just for a box? I might have to start scrounging around camera shows for anything with Leica printed on it!

That is a lot of money for an empty box - but I bet the buyer has the lens (which is worth a lot) and is figuring that he/she will make this price back and more when the lens bundle is eventually sold. There is no underestimating what collectors will pay...

It sure is a fine box. It's made of gold on the inside, right?

He also bought a lens hood for $114 too...
That was very enterprising of him, to sell the box separately from the lens, rather than letting the box enhance the value of the lens sold later. It's good the serial number doesn't match, though, as it would be too bad to separate them otherwise.
I still have my 1967 box and plastic bubble for the 1st version Summicron 35mm... and the lens too!

Hey Doug! How much for the box?
LOL, Frank; keeping it as long as I have the lens! Al Kaplan says he sold his 8-element 35 'cron because the collectors are willing to pay crazy prices, and they value it more than he does. There's some merit to that argument, so someday I might be persuaded to sell the lens with its box etc for some stupendous price. Same for my 1968 "fat" Tele-Elmarit and ITs box...

Hummmm........ I wonder if the buyer has the lens with the same serial number that's on the box? That would help to explain it.
If Leitz sees what one of their empty boxes brings, maybe we'll see them offer replacements with the serial number of your lens on it!

I've seen empty boxes sell well at gun shows too. Many many people automatically discard boxes and packing material. Compulsive neatniks and collectors don't, and are often willing to pay good money for what others wouldn't want cluttering their limited storage space.
Having the box exactly matching your goodie, even to the serial number if applicable, would be ideal. But a box with the wrong serial or slightly off in other respects still is better than none. Remember, due to the unfortunate habits of some, boxes are always rarer than the objects that go in them!

Doug can I tell my wife that she has an "unfortunate habit"?
That would be a very understated description of the behavior. I have long wondered how long it will be before I go out with the garbage...

Damn, am I glad that half my old storage shed is full of old camera and lens boxes.
Wait till my wife finds out it's an "Investment" - LOL.
