This thing is quirky, but I like it.

Had my x100 for a day now. It definitely has its quirks about it. Overall though I think once working within those quirks, the camera is great. I personally hate AF but honestly it works very well.

I am confident that after a FW upgrade or two this camera will be matched by none. All it needs is a few of the rear controls to be re-programmable (more flexibility) and the manual focus tweaks and Itll be grand. Even then it still performs fantastic.

Hmm, but try taking pictures of smallish subjects at middle distances (2-3m), even of people, using the OVF. You will find the AF is somewhat hit and miss, maybe due to parallax as it is not actually focussing on the patch that the OVF shows.

This is one thing I noticed as well. The box and the frame line by default shows infinity framing. lets say the object is 2-3m away, and the af box does not fully cover the near subject, the camera tends to focus the background. To overcome this, usually I make sure the entire object is in the af box and there is enough "room" outside the af box with is occupied by the nearer object.

This is one area, (no pun intended), where a triangulating IR rangefinder keyed to the OVF, (like on the Contax G2 or Hexar AF), would possibly be a far more practical solution. Contrast detect is only really verifiable with TTL viewing. I find though that when photographing fairly close subjects, I am instinctively shifting my framing up a bit and to the left before focusing to try and compensate for this parallax. It's a bit like a habit I had many years ago when I had a screwmount Leica IIIa.

If you place the camera on a tripod and place the focusing rectangle over a subject at different distances and toggle back and forth between the OVF and EVF, you can see instantly by how much the focus spot is shifting due to parallax.

Yes I have been doing this too, or using EVF at shorter distances. Other forums have postulated possible firmware improvements (such as the cross hairs in AF-C mode at least attempting to correct for parallax for the currently focussed distance).

It's a bit of a mixed bag this camera. 😕

The longer the delays are in getting the cameras out there to potential buyers patiently waiting ... the more chance there is of some of these people re-thinking their choice after they read these types of reports.

Whether we like it or not we are heavily influenced by what we read on the internet and some may decide to hang back and wait for the next incarnation!

Yeah I'm kinda thinking the same thing. Its quirks are starting to concern me a tad. May keep my GF1, use the money for a long overdue new snazzy hi-def tv, wait for the bugs and price to drop and buy later.

I once jumped on a media hype fueled bandwagon too soon and a plethora of 'micro-adjustments' which followed caused me a big headache. The r-d1 suits me well and I am not in a hurry, at all.

The thing that really irks me is ... every day I check my emails waiting for the one from DCW that says:

"Dear Keith ... we are pleased to inform you our shipment of the X100 has arrived and your camera is ready for pickup!"

Alternately I'd settle for:

Dear Keith ... Our shipment of X100's has arrived but unfortunately not in sufficient quantity to supply your particular order. We are expecting another shipment in two weeks and will be able to supply your camera then!"

Ringing them is pointless I've discovered ... far more satisfying to call the number that gives you an automated voice telling you the time. At least I know I'm being given factual information! 😀
