as all of you are, i'm sure, aware, i got an M9 just before the summer started.

i took a bunch of photos on my vacation to paris. the M9 is a lovely, lovely camera when there's enough light. the resolution is amazing, the colors delicious. it could be quieter, and lighter, and the high ISO completely blows, but it's still a lovely thing. most of all, i've had to contend with sharp sensor/full frame DoF focus errors. on film, such errors get masked by grain. on the M9, every half inch matters. maybe i should stop my stupid lens down. lol.

i've not taken as many photos this summer as i thought i would, but i think that has more to do with austin being about a million degrees farenheit outside than with any lack of interest in shooting.

this last weekend, i went to a little bar party here in town. the theme was 70s summer camp. i had a very good time and it's likely that i'll go back again on this coming sunday for the last one of the summer. i took the camera. here's what happened.

on the way in, there was a little scene being filmed for some kind of video.

i never took my collapsible summicron off the camera. in retrospect, i wish i'd brought a 75, but i worked around it. i like to stand off a bit from the action. i don't know how people do street work with 21s and 28s. my hat is way, way off to people like forum member walter leporati. i'm more of a chicken.

the lens looks soft opened up, but i like the dreamy bits. focus on her lacy garment. also, for all of these, we have very strong light here in the late afternoon, and there were lots of shadows-to-light transitions in the bar. i bet stopping down would have helped a lot with the aberrations.

however, when used correctly, the lens is quite sharp. so, i say it's pilot error.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand, the thin DoF comes back to bite. girl leaned in at the last minute.

i'm learning to expose a little differently that i'm used to for either the RD-1 or film leicas. the meter isn't as spotty as i'd like. for shots like this, i've had to guess a bit and do a fair amount in PP.

i love this photo, but i would have loved it more if i'd been shooting at f 5.6 instead of wide open.

of these two, i like the B&W copy better, but i'm somewhat taken by the color glow on the girl on the right.

and while i will probably shoot this weekend at a narrower aperture, i do like a lot of the soft edges. very 70s summer camp.

i still have a lot of problems getting colors consistent in changing light. B&W is so much easier in certain ways.

this is the first one of the set that jumped out at me from the thumbnails. grab shot, but it turned out to my liking.

here, we see issues around choice of background. maybe this week i won't sit where i have to shoot in to the bright sky. but that's where the good seat was.

these two, along with the booby close up, are my favorites of the set. they jumped out too. so, clearly, when used properly, the m9/collapsible cron set works. i need some more practice. yay for practice.

oh, my M9, how I miss you. ;) So, these were all with the collapsable summicron? I was thinking of one for my M8. :)

it's well worth missing...

yes all with the collapsible. it's funny... i thought it was maybe the best 50 i had on my RD-1. i'm less convinced on the M9. perhaps i just need to stop it down a bit. i love the way it handles, and the collapsing is a great feature. there's a nice looking one in the classifieds right now.
