This weekend with a 35/2.8 C-Biogon & 35 Sumicron v. IV

yes - was done in-camera

yes - was done in-camera

The Fuji F72EXR has an in-camera scene mode called "Pro Photo" where it tries to isolate the subject from the background. It's a novel feature.

That's not the lens's natural bokeh, there are some blades of grass in the background that are in focus and some parts around the edge of the tree are blurred. Was that done in-camera?

it's automatic

it's automatic

In the menus, you select it as a scene (like fireworks, sports, etc.), then it gives you feedback whether it worked or not (it often doesn't work, if it can't detect the background, or background distance.

Interesting. Is this all automatic? Or do you somehow "paint" it?

(sorry for off-topic.)

Actually, the 35/2 Biogon is a very good lens in its own right. Quite sharp and with a color rendition that matches my other Zeiss M-mount glass (50/2, 50/1.5, 21/2.8) pretty well. I wonder if the difference in cost isn't from having an OEM manufacturer (Cosina) do the actual manufacturing as opposed to workers in Germany. Whatever the reason, the image quality of the Zeiss glass seems comparable to Leica. It was ever thus: they are great rivals in terms of optics. As for long term durability of the lenses, we will see. In terms of M-mount photography I think there are more and higher-quality lenses available for M-mount cameras than there ever have been before. Having to choose among them is a nice problem to have.
