I have here in my hand a Distagon that was sawn in half for demonstration purposes, as seen at the Amsterdam Photo Academy this morning. On the one hand, I found it fascinating, but on the other hand I thought: this is such a waste! (Then again: you end up with two of these...)

I saw a video of them doing this with a Nikon lens, and it was a diamond blade on a bandsaw with coolant, so you really have to flush it out afterwards. You can also do it with a water blade, but it's a bit rougher cut. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRyVeyD1muM
