Slow learner,but keen!
I have to admit to being faced with the same 'conflict'.In fact my wife said to me only yesterday,'why don't you get yourself a really good digital camera'.
I have to admit that the results from my 2mp.p/shoot are almost always tremendous,---That is usually in the context of family shots of our children and their four little girls. In fact the success ratio from the digital camera in these situations, must be at least five times that of the various rangefinders that I have been playing with.If I was being rational,I would probably follow her advice. But when the film cameras hit the spot,it gives me a real kick, and I don't think that I could ever put them away.(In addition just started to play with a TLR in family situations, and that's fun too)
Besides it keeps me off the streets!

i think that those poor souls with their
a] tiny insignificant digiboxes
b] massive ungainly SLR digiboxes
are just jealous of my dee-lightfull real cameras .
But I had better hide my Canon G2 - which looks like a rangefinder , but isn't !

Most of my gear is older mechanical stuff, with AE being the fanciest electronics. So it all operates in pretty much the same way, whether SLR or RF. It's the later ones like the Contax G2 and Fuji GA645 that have more automation where I can lose track of how to set the film speed, for example. The most complex so far is the Pentax 645NII, and I'm still not quite comfortable with it, whereas the newer Zeiss Ikon and Bessa R4 are like slipping on comfy old shoes.

Not long ago, while shooting in the cold on the streets in a small mountain town, I stopped in a bar to warm myself and reload the R3A.
There was a nice couple at the bar, about my age (mid-40s). The husband noticed me loading film and said "Wow...you're stil shooting film."
He said it in a very positive way and we had a nice conversation afterwards.
I had the distinct impression that shooting film in an old style camera had given me something like "Artist" status with them.
Some folks may just assume you can't afford digital. Others may assume that you know something most people don't know.

I think the correct term for us should be dyna-sonics.
True, the fast advance of technology and its marketing zunami produces "wows" in most if not all of the people, including us. But part and parcel of this advance is the advance of information through the internet, producing at the same time the relative intensification of variety, to which we belong. I am not sure at all if without the internet I would be using Kievs or film at all.
And part and parcel of the wows our old cameras get, belongs to our distinctive way out from the widespread feelings of frustration and anger for all those things people today want but cannot buy.
Budget concerns aside, the main issue is that we are not the missing link but belong to an existing living trend worldwide. Some part of us, at different proportion, lives within every single human of our planet.
Hippie-sonics, perhaps ?
Cheers,
Ruben
