Thoughts on waiting for the mailman

I am still sitting here, watching 24 off the DVR lamenting about the cameras in transit. I am waiting on a Zorki 3M, Kiev 2(56 vintage) and a Zorki 6. I am also waiting on a cigar shipment(some nice Torano Virtosuso that I found on sale) I am also waiting on a 50mm f1.4 and a 24mm f2.8 both in nikon mount. :bang: I feel like the kid stuck out in right field during little league that needs to use the bathroom. Pardon me while I go perform the 'Pee-Pee' dance.

I decided to read the board and work on my Zorki 3 that was posted on the "Show off you FSU gear" thread. I got it completely torn down, which is actually a good thing as the shutter curtains went kaput earlier this week. Anybody know if I can use the shutter curtains for a Z4 in my Z3? The curtains are about the same length, but they are a milimeter or two shorter in height. I bought these from Alex-photo off of ebay and he sells them as replacement curtains for Zorki/FEDs. Unfortunately, they are of the crimped metal type and not the sown curtains that were in the camera originally. I may go look at the fabric store tomorrow to see if I can find some replacement fabric. I would like to reuse the laths that came with the camera as they might be a bit quieter as discussed in another thread.

Oh well, I have rambled enough. Time to go dance by the door!!!!😀

Hmmm, can't say I've compared the two, (or any two models for that matter) but like you, I'd assumed they were the same. Just guessing here, but it seems the way the curtains sit inside the rails/troughs, whatever you call 'em, the 1mm lack at top and bottom would still be covered and light-tight. But maybe not. Again, that's just guessing.

Hopefull someone else with more experience will chime in. Keep us, the curious, posted with your progress.
 
The later ones are supposed to be wider, but should be back compatible, and if you are making your own you should make them to the wider standard.

You will need new ribbon and fabric.

You should be OK with them being no more than 1 or 2 mm narrower.

The length of the 2nd (long) curtain and the ribbons of the 1st curtain (the ones that go around the pulleys) must be exactly the same as the original and I hope you marked where the end points were on the old ones before removal.

Fabric store material won't be light tight and if you cut it, the edges will ravel out.
I'm going to try thinned black latex paint as a sealer and frazzle preventer on my next project unless someone on here knows of a US source for curtain material.

I haven't gotten much farther on the curtain replacement. I spent most of the day getting a FED 3 and a Kiev 3A up and running. The FED got a roll of film through it today as well, so we will see if I fixed the problems with it. I plan to get on with the Z3 repair tomorrow. The newer curtains that I have are the same length. The straps are a bit longer, but they can be cut. I am thinking that I will take a sample to the fabric stores here in town and see if they can match it. That will be some time from now though. If I get lucky I will certainly let everyone know.

Dee, this is the first time that I have actually gotten something back together from a complete strip down. I have a couple of Zorki 4Ks to prove it. Welll, actually, they are just a collection of parts...
 
Got the curtains back in. It took two or three tries before they lined up right due to the loss in width. The shutter crate is back installed. Everything appears to be functioning properly. I will attempt to piece the camera back together tomorrow(too much red wine tonight) and see if everything still works properly. Once the Z3M gets here I will do a CLA how to with pics and everything.

Jay (ZorkiKat) says the sewing is not necessary the new glue will hold the fold over ok, so all we need to know is what glue he uses or recommends? But his glue & fabric probably won't be available in Olk or UK.
It would ne nice if TV confirmed that it was quieter?

I need you to take a Zorki 1 apart and send me two screws... one missing on purchase the other damaged beyond repair, by previous owner(s).

You instead need to make notes/diagrams at each stage in notebook, and keep each part stuck to a long strip of pressure sensitive tape, in order removed. You reverse the page order and the camera puts itself back together, almost. The dicipline of making the notes is real difficult...

Well, last time the mailman visited me he left a bill oif 57 euro behind.
I ordered some films and developer from the US... Never again.
First, the hassle with the first-time-creditcard, endign up with a wire transfer instead that cost me 15 euro. Then the shipping, that was over 30 bucks (still the cheapest!). Finally, the customs guys decided the $250 film material (INCL shipping!!) is a value of 230 euro subject to duty 🙂bang: i would love to exchange some money for that rate!) so I have to pay 57 euro import duty on it.
Never again.
 
I will let you know if the new and improved shutters(the new crimped metal type, the Z3 had the folded and sewn fabric covered lathe) are louder than before. I lucked out at the fabric store. They did have some rubber backed fabric, but it was white and about twice as thick. I did buy a sample and try to use it. The dye that I used to dye it back casused some problems. The rubber became too stiff to use.
I did use Pliobond to mount the new shutters. The Pliobond worked great to secure the shutters. I found it at the local hardware store.
As far as the disassembly process went, I used a segmented plastic organizer. As I removed parts I put them in the different compartments. Theoretically speaking, I should be able to start at the last compartment used and work my way backwards and reassemble the camera. The slow speed attachment(actually, a metal bar running from the top to the bottom of the shutter crate) is the only thing that has me stumped. I will ponder it for a bit before attempting to put it back in. All told, this has not been near as bad as I feared.

I'l bet you could glue two strips of scrap over the metal laths with no problem. Aat least cover the two opposing surfaces.

I've had the same problem with rubber backed material available locally. I even tried painting some satin ribbon and grosgrain ribbon with latex based paint, with the same results as you.

I think a bunch of us North American tinkerers should buy a chunk of material from Oleg. It's $.04 a square centimeter but the minimum order is $30.00. No shipping charges on a $30.00 order though. How many shutters will that do ? One of us could order it, cut it up and send it out to the others in regular 1st class envelopes.

I realize it is a case of trusting internet buddies, otherwise unknown, with some of your money but it would be the cheapest solution in the long run.

So, when it comes to waiting for the mailman, does it seem like it to anyone else, that the tracking information, if provided, tends to be useless? My last purchase (a lens) came with a tracking number, but when I checked the status online, the first update, told me that shipping was arranged, but the lens hadn't necessarily been shipped, and then the next update came several days later, a few hours AFTER it arrived at my house, telling me that it arrived at my house. I can only imagine if in-car GPS worked the same way, where on the map, it only had the starting location, and then it would provide no other info other than tell me I have arrived at the destination... but only well after I had actually arrived.
 
I just received the 24mm lens that I was waiting on and the box of cigars that I ordered. By the tracking info that I was given, neither was to be delivered till tomorrow. Now if only shipping from the motherland was so qiuick. Oh, I tore the replacement curtains out as I could not get them to line up correctly. One was always leaning. I have just removed the shutter curtains from one of my 'junk' Z4Ks. Oddly enough, they were wider than the replacement curtains I had received from the motherland. They match the original curtains out of the Z3 exactly. Looks like it will be a straight drop in. I will have to re-glue some of the curtains as the old russian stuff just isn't holding up. I will update again tomorrow.

You're lucky, yours arrived. My tracked item, a lens, was accurately tracked to the airport and recorded as having left the States - then no more. Nothing from sender, USPS, Royal Mail or any other shipper. No-one seems yo be able to link ther two tracking numbers. Guess someone just chucked it out of the hold mid-Atlantic
 
Stupid thought for the day ....... Window blinds , I was dragged round the local Ikea store at the weekend by my beloved and spotted a roller blind that they describe as 100% blackout , made of acrylic coated cotton , Size 100cmx195 cm though they do other widths , A possible source for shutter curtains ?

As I said , stupid thought but I might just have a closer look next time I'm in there and see how thick it is .
