Three (3) Masterpiece Lenses to Own ?

35 Asph Lux/Asph Cron (Preference/speed, I'd be more then happy with either)
50 Lux/Cron "
75 Lux/Cron "

I know that's not three lenses, so for 3 lenses I'd do the 35/2.0 50/2.0 75/1.4

For me the best 2 lens kit is the 35/2.0 and the 75/1.4

interesting. The 75 has a larger frameline, something to consider over the 90mm. Thanks.

My vote's for the 35 Summicron ASPH, 50 Summilux ASPH, 75 Summicron AA.

For my kit, though, I'm considering replacing the 75 Summicron AA with the 90 Summicron AA.

If I would get rid of everything else, I would keep the C-Sonnar
and 28 Ultron.

Not exactly a Leitz answer, I know, but this
would be the most general purpose 2 lens kit for me.

Best,

Roland.

Two-lens outfit for film? 35/75

Which ones depend on what you like, what your priorities are, what you can afford.

My choice: pre-aspheric 35 Summilux (much smaller, lighter and sweeter-handlimg than the Aspherics, despite seriously inferior image quality) and 75 Summicron (smaller, lighter & more magical than Summilux).

For a 50, the current Zeiss Sonnar.

For digi, probably 25/2 (doesn't exist yet: I live in hope) and 50/1 Noctilux.

But why not ask whether roast beef is better than ice-cream? About as meaningful a question.

Cheers,

R.

Canon 50/1.8 - first of the modern symetrical lenses, it's the 'Cron's genious grandfather. Let me put it like this, I sold my 'Cron & kept the Canon.
Canon 35/1.8 - just a marvellous lens
Canon 28/3.5 - first "fast" wide angle. The only other was Leica's 28/6.3 Hector.
Honorable Mention: Elmar 90/4 - mine is uncoated and a joy to use with Reala.

2 lens kit would be either the 50 & 90 or 28 & 50. If I'm shooting the 35, it's a one lens kit ;)

Not really. Roast beef IS better than ice cream.

Anyhow, sometimes the most ordinary questions ferret out some good answers, such as Roland's above.

Enjoy your ice cream entre.

I consider a pre (CZJ) or post war (CZ/CZO) 50mm f1.5 Sonnar as a masterpiece lens. It's in Contax mount, but it's so good that some folks buy expensive adaptors to use them on their M mount cameras.

I'd agree with you. But neither my late paternal grandmother nor my wife's late aunt Helen would agree with either of us.

Then again, there's a question of where the beef comes from and how it's cooked.

I prefer smaller, lighter lenses with a distinctive look (current 50 Sonnar over current 50 Nokton, old 35 Summilux over current 35 Summilux).

What do you mean by 'best' or 'classic' or any of those 'ultimate' definitions?

Cheers,

R.

I have my dream kit

I have my dream kit

My 3 lens dream kit, pick any 3 from the following:

28mm Konica M-Hexanon
35mm Canon
35mm Konica UC-Hexanon
50mm Nikkor
50mm Dual Range Summicron
75mm Voigtlander Color Heliar
85mm Nikkor
90mm Elmarit
135mm Canon

My 2 lens kit, pick 2 from the list above.

I can never choose so I end up toting too many. :D

Interesting choice, rogue_d. I have this lens my own self. Have been using it only a couple of months, and I also like the results. I've heard others say the Canon or Serenar 50mm 1.4 is a better lens, and also the 1.8. I don't have those lenses. I tend to like aperture, and so went for the f/1.2. I like the speed, of course. Sharpness and contrast have been OK. Bokeh is nice. I also have the f/0.95 50mm. It's less convenient to shoot with, of course.

(Btw, leica folks, sory to hijack your thread here for chit-chat about Japanese optics. We'll wrap it up shortly....)

Anyhoo, it's interesting you chose this lens. I don't have any other focal lengths for my Canon 7 (and VERY soon to be Leica IIIf). I need a 35mm.

I am conservative so I would be happy with a late 35mm summicron, a late 50mm summicron and a mint condition 90mm summicron. In fact I have the first two and realise that I do not need the third as I already have a perfectly respectable tele elmarit. Besides which the 90mm summi is so heavy I would probably be loathe to lug it around.....but hey this is about masterpieces and dream outfits is it not. All of the above are masterpieces. Like many on this forum however, I cannot rid myself of the desire to try new and different lenses so I know I would never be satisfied.

get a 35 anything, get a 75 to 90 anything, and then get the noctilux just to remember: it's the photographer, not the gear. :D
