Who would even WANT a photo of U2 anyway? Maybe when they had some credibility. They have now morphed into the control freaks who erected a NEW wall in Berlin during the celebrations of the 20th anniversary of tearing down the OLD wall so that fans couldn't see their (gasp) 20 minute concert.

And have you ever stood in front of a NIN concert at full bore? Lucky enough to survive AT ALL much less with a camera!

And as for the other bands mentioned - Prince, Kanye West and Bjork?? Come on, get serious!

That was priceless. It is true that a lot of those former great bands have taken directions with their music that I have willingly not followed too closely. I wouldn't say that they have sold out, it just seems that some of the early magic does seem lost.

Anyway, back to the topic of photography at concerts, well I guess things could be a lot worse, like a facial photo of Keith Richards taken with a razor sharp modern 90mm summicron. Those things are pretty unforgiving at the best of times. It is known that many females over the age of 30 tend to run in the opposite direction when the shooter is holding one coupled with a Leica M. Back to Richards, now that would be a potential photo moment that I wouldn't be too upset if I missed.

G11 Ad?

G11 Ad?

Was the original article really about concert photos or was it a paid ad by Cannon for the G11? IMHO the G11 was mentioned too many times and too prominently for this to be just a story about concert photos. Paid product placement? "I'm buying a G11 just like in that article so that I can take great concert photos." Nothing would surprise me anymore.

Similar experience, used to shoot with DSLR but I gave up shooting shows a few years years ago already. Gave up the DSLR since then as well and have since only shot with Bessa a couple of shows.
Different for sure.

Same band (Earth), shot with DSLR a few years ago:

Shot with Bessa a few years later:

Very interesting conjecture there ... hmmmm ....

"I'm buying a G11 just like in that article so that I can take great concert photos." Nothing would surprise me anymore.

The only thing I might offer to refute your theory is that the alleged photo from the Canon is semi-sucky at best! It's obviously inferior to that shown which allegedly was taken with the DSLR. I would think that if Canon paid for that, or even submitted it as a pre-prepared article, they would have used a much better example photo!
