I just bought an R-D1...for the third time. Despite having an M8, and despite being on a film kick right now, and despite wanting an X100, and despite looking to make bigger prints that 6MP isn't great for....I couldn't resist the Epson at a good price. Looking forward to trying it with a few lenses I didn't have the last time I had one: the Nokton 35mm f1.2, the Perar 35mm f3.5, the Hexanon 50mm f2.

This makes it my 'most purchased' camera, overtaking five other models I've bought twice (optional reading, my blog post).

Anyone else bought an R-D1 after selling one and changing his or her mind? Anyone done that twice?

No, but I bought an Xpan twice 😱 - on the upside I got the 90mm also the second time 😀

No, but when I bought my first R-D1 in 2005 (I later bought a second body, used), I didn't have enough money left over to buy lenses for it. So I sold my Mamiya 7's 150mm. Last year, I was able to buy another 150mm.

I recently sold my R-D1 and bought an M8. I should have it this week and am anxious to play with it. I had owned, sold, and rebought Nikon F2AS twice before and the most was the Plaubel 670. I have sold it twice, bought it 3 times, and finally sold it for a third time. I still have the 67W, but I think that I will never buy another one as film is getting difficult for me now. It was a sad day to let it go.

Yes, I bought an Epson R-D1s new from Japan and used it with the CV 40 1.4. After a year of use, I sold it, thinking a DSLR with fast 50 1.4 lens would replace it. I was disappointed with the results, sold the DSLR with lens and bought a used R-D1s. Then, I sold that and bought a slightly newer R-D1s. Then, I sold THAT for another slightly newer R-D1s. Finally, I sold that for an Epson R-D1xg! Kind of an obsession, but I'm stopping now. It's a great camera and I'm never letting go,...for real, this time.

The R-D1xg is a great camera like the R-D1s. While it's convenient to use a 4 or 8 Gig memory card, using a 2 Gig card wasn't really an issue for me. I like the larger LCD screen. However, since the resolution seems to be the same, the pixels seem a little more apparent than on the smaller R-D1s screen. It's like making a slight enlargement of a print with the same resolution. The grip feels very nice and the camera feels more secure in my hand. It's a shame the grip wasn't sold separately. Overall, the difference isn't great, but the extra features are nice. I mostly bought it because it was the newest used Epson available at the time for a fairly good price. I don't plan on selling this camera. I'm done now with buying/selling/trading Epson cameras. Unless, of course, a nice, well-priced Epson comes along, as a possible second.

i don't think i could easily compare them milo. they are very different. the x100 is a fabulous camera but does not offer the rf experience. in the end it is a very sophisticated point and shoot. but it's a p&s that i could live with. the images from the x100 are superb, facinating...the lens is amazingly sharp.

the rd1 is a rangefinder, a thoroughbred rangefinder. while the images from it do not have a striking modern sharp edge to them, they are more like a beautifully coloured old world painting. i like having both.

Hmmm. Not quite my experience. Bought an RD1 to get into the digital Leica M experience. It's slow write speed and RF alignment sensitivity annoyed me. Got an M8, twice. Finally settled on an M9 and haven't looked back.

I've bought a Canon P three times, and sold them all. Tempted to re-buy the R-D1 from time to time--I miss the analog dials and manual shutter cocking. I think my M9 backup will end up being a GXR or, possibily, a NEX-7, depending on what the reviews are like.

My cousin married the same guy twice too. I told her that didn't count. As for cameras, I don't shoot digital, but I've bought a lot of Feds (don't ask), and I keep buying Leica R 90 Summicrons and putting them on Nikon film SLR's. The latter has worked out a lot better than the former.

If I did shoot digital I'd probably go for one of those Epsons myself. Some of the online B&W shots from the R-D1's look pretty good.

I assume the RD1xg has more robust RF alignment because that is the most worrisome for me. At least the original RD1 is much easier to DIY align than the RD1s or so I heard. I'll probably buy one if I see a reasonable price like below 2K.
