It's amazing what you can find scrounging around junkyards and thrift stores. Here in Singapore, the local flea market is open 7 days a week, located smack in the central area of town. It's usually made up of vendors who line up their finds on a straw mat on the roadside. Takes a bit of scouting around and rummaging through lots of broken items but every once in a while, something in pretty good condition usually pops up. Was just down there yesterday and picked up:

Yashica GTN Black in great working condition (haven't tested the meter) for $6

Lomo LC-A Kompact with a stuck lens cover but otherwise in decent condition for $3

Anyone else with other similar stories?

Thrift Store find

Terry, I picked up a very" nioce" Rollie XF35 at a garage sale just around the corner from home. Cost $4.00!!, takes a pretty good photo as well!!

I went to Sungei Road regularly, and never found anything better than a broken Iskra.

From my experience, it seemed that 50% of the sellers there have lots of worthless point-and-shoots, and about one or two have old SLR equipment.

I've never found any worthwhile equipment at any thrift store around here, unfortunately. And I used to scour the stores for old stereo equipment, so I did my share of searching. Well, too bad for me, but I understand that some others have found wonderful things.

Best Regards,

I keep hearing stories from folks here about the great finds they've made. Near me, the thrift shops (Salvation Army, Goodwill) have nothing but "focus-free" 35mm plastic cameras, and the occasional Kodak Instamatic. I'm sure the good stuff, to the extent it ever comes into those places, gets picked up by the full-time flea market and eBay sellers.

My 2 best garage sale finds:

1.) a Nikon FG with Nikkor 50mm series E lens that was broken, for $20. It needed a new battery. Fixed.

2.) a broken Nikon F60 with Nikkor AF 28-80 zoom, for $10. The previous owner didn't read the manual which stated that non-G lenses must be set to minimum (or max?) aperture, on this camera. I did this and the error message on the LCD screen went away. Fixed.

It's all a matter of timing. After the success of my first trip there in years, I'm quite encouraged to go back periodically to see what's available. Apart from the 2 items I mentioned, there was also a Konica C35 and a Zenit 122. Not too bad for a 20 min snoopabout.

Antique Stores have been a Goldmine for me.

I've found (all in working order)

Kodak Kadet Duaflex IV
Argus C3 "the Brick"
Baldwa Jewella

I've run rolls through all of them, and after cleaning, worked fine!
