I just got an m6 and really like my friends "thumbs up" grip on the back. He mentioned that people in the past had used the film advance lever against the lock to shoot with the same ergonomics and that it was actually modeled on this. So i wondered about the stress this would put on the mechanical masterpiece. So of course i emailed sherry krauter:

No fortitude from the factory. It can be done, but not the best idea. Best

hello ms. krauter. My name is dan sutton and I have just obtained an m6
with 50 summicron. I happen to know a customer of yours, xxxxx xxxxxx and
got to use his "thumbs up" grip on his m9. I really like the comfort of the
grip and the security it gives. He mentioned that others in the past used
the film advance against the lock as essentially the same grip. I was just
wondering if this put any undue stress on the mechanics of the camera and
thus should be avoided or if the advance lever had been designed with this
in mind and thus had the necessary fortitude already from the factory.

thanks for your time and I'm sure that you will be seeing my m6 anytime that
it needs some attention.

just wanted to post this information for any that it might apply to. I'll be getting a thumbs up as soon as i can.

this is my first post here and really enjoy the photography i've seen, especially in the 50 pre-Asph thread. really great stuff in there.

thanks for the post and information. holding the weight of the camera against the film advance lever sounds like a bad idea to begin with.

I knew the thumbs up from an M8 and I really liked it, but when I bought myself an M6, I also bought a grip. By now, I prefer the later. I usually carry the camera by the grip, with a strap around my arm for security, feels comfortable and safe.

I have a Thumbs-Up on my M8 and love it. I have never felt a need for it on my M6. I use the advance lever and have for many years with other cameras also. Never had a problem.
