I learned to drive a stick in a red VW bus when I was 16.
Drove across country in a light blue one three or four times in my twenties and thirties. Few things as exciting as heading east (downhill) on US 56 from New Mexico to Kansas with VW bus brakes in a blizzard.
Pissed into a funnel which went through the floor of another one more than a few times while on the road (I recall that being a very old white one with the split windshield).
That would be a good poll: How many times have you woken up (or come down) in a VW bus?

Yet another one. This one in Australia, 1970. It kept blowing engines as the aircooling could not cope with the heat in the Outback. Got rid of it and switched to a Honda 450 motorcycle instead.
This is at the "Devils Marbles".
I have owned at least 6 VW buses in my life, a 1952 Karman Camper, a 1955 Samba, and a 1960 camper. They do break down but are easy to fix and they were responsible for a major movement of people in the 60's. Like demented boxes they migrated towards warm climate, cheap drugs and drink and in a perpetual search for hot showers!!!! For many years the worlds largest used VW Bus market was around the American Express Office in Amsterdam. Prices went down as airplane departure time got closer and closer!

My dad had a 1970 VW Van...I learned to drive stick in that car...took my driving test in it...I can't remember how many times I pulled that engine out for whatever reasons...

My first car was a 1962 VW Bug. I have another on my bucket list and it may happen but the Microbus is far too expensive these days. 🙂

Funny--I never had an urge for one. I correctly thought there was zero driver/ front seat passenger protection in a head-on collision.

I was lucky enough to drive and detail my mentor's bus but never could quite come up with the cash for one. Bought half a dozen MG cars over the years though...talk about zero protection...who cares? Never had a wreck in any of my sports cars, from MG's to Corvettes. People and deer were always causing havoc with the family station wagon and that damned Camry. Hit 5 deer with that stupid car in three years. Glad that piece of crap went to the junk yard.😡
Toyotas must have had a bullseye somewhere on it.

Somehow, that Olympic Athletic Club sticker looks way out of place.
I never owned one of these, nor wanted to, but I drove a few. I agree, they seemed to offer zero crash protection to the driver. At least on a motorcycle you can bail out if necessary, in the bus you're in for the duration. Like Tom wrote so eloquently, it isn't what the buses actually were, it's everything they symbolized. All this one needs is a "Don't laugh, your daughter could be in here" sticker. Maybe a Mr. Natural too.
